What this calculator does

CPC, cost per click, is what you pay for each click on an ad. This calculator works it out from two figures you usually have to hand: your CPM, the cost per thousand impressions, and your CTR, the share of viewers who click. Enter both, and it tells you what each click is really costing.

How to use it

  1. Enter your CPM, the cost per 1,000 impressions, in the CPM field.
  2. Enter your CTR as a percentage in the CTR field, so type 2 for 2%.
  3. Press Calculate. The result shows your cost per click in dollars. Use Reset to clear both fields and start again.

How it works

The idea is simple: take the cost of a thousand impressions and divide it by the number of clicks those impressions produce.

Out of 1,000 impressions, the clicks you get are 1,000 × (CTR ÷ 100), which works out to 10 × CTR. The cost of those same 1,000 impressions is your CPM. Divide one by the other and you have the cost of a single click:

CPC = CPM ÷ (10 × CTR)

Written out in full, that is the same as CPC = (CPM ÷ 1,000) ÷ (CTR ÷ 100), which is exactly what the tool computes.

A worked example

Say your CPM is $5 and your CTR is 2%.

Out of 1,000 impressions, 2% click, which is 20 clicks. Those 1,000 impressions cost $5. So each click costs $5 ÷ 20 = $0.25.

Through the formula: 5 ÷ (10 × 2) = 5 ÷ 20 = $0.25. Same answer, either way you look at it.

What CPC tells you

CPC, CPM, and CTR are three views of the same campaign, and they move together. For a fixed CPM, a lower CTR pushes your CPC up, because fewer clicks have to carry the same cost of those impressions. Doubling your CTR roughly halves your cost per click.

Cost per click is the number to watch when you are paying for clicks rather than views, and when you care about traffic actually arriving rather than an ad simply being seen. If you have the cost and impressions instead and want the CPM, the CPM calculator handles that, and to estimate earnings from the publisher side, the AdSense calculator uses these same metrics.

Questions people ask

What is a good CPC?

It depends entirely on your niche and goal. Competitive areas like finance and insurance can run several dollars a click, while broad consumer topics are far cheaper. The useful comparison is against your own past campaigns and what a click is worth to you, not a universal number.

How does CTR affect CPC?

Inversely. At the same CPM, a higher CTR means more clicks share the cost of the impressions, so each click costs less. A lower CTR means fewer clicks carry that cost, so each one costs more.

What is the difference between CPC and CPM?

CPM is the cost per thousand impressions, so you pay for views. CPC is the cost per click, so you pay for clicks. This tool converts from one to the other using your CTR, which is the bridge between impressions and clicks.
