That intuition has a distinguished champion, and his argument was not sentimental. It was hard-headed, and it came from the head of one of the most serious research institutions on Earth.
The man who made the case for useless knowledge
In October 1939, an American educator named Abraham Flexner published an essay with a deliberately provocative title: The Usefulness of Useless Knowledge. Flexner was no dreamy romantic. He was the founding director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the legendary research haven that was home to Albert Einstein, among many others, an institution built specifically to let brilliant minds pursue ideas with no regard whatsoever for practical application.
Flexner's argument was bold and, with a century of hindsight, devastatingly correct. He claimed that a huge proportion of the discoveries that later transformed human life were made by people who were not trying to be useful at all. They were driven purely by curiosity, chasing questions that fascinated them, with no thought of any application, and the world-changing usefulness came later, often much later, as an unplanned side effect.
His favourite examples were the scientists who unravelled electricity and magnetism, such as Michael Faraday and James Clerk Maxwell. They investigated these phenomena in the nineteenth century out of sheer fascination with how nature worked, not because they were trying to invent anything. Faraday, poking at the strange relationship between magnets and wires, was following his curiosity, not a business plan. And from that "useless" curiosity-driven work eventually flowed the electric motor, the generator, radio, television, and ultimately the entire electrical and electronic world we now live in. As Flexner's argument is sometimes summarised: no one chasing pure curiosity about the atom set out to build a computer, and yet without that useless curiosity, there would be no computer chips at all.
The deep point Flexner was making is that you cannot tell in advance which knowledge will turn out to matter. The usefulness of an idea often only becomes visible in hindsight, decades down the line, along paths nobody could have predicted. So a society, or a person, that only ever pursues knowledge with an obvious immediate use will systematically starve itself of exactly the curiosity-driven exploration that produces the biggest breakthroughs. The "useless" question is frequently the seed of the useful answer, and the tragedy is that you can never know which useless question it will be. The only way to get the payoffs is to value the whole enterprise of curiosity, including the parts that look like they lead nowhere.
Flexner was writing about grand science, not shoelace tips. But the spirit runs straight through to a list like this. The instinct that makes you want to know why a wombat, or a word, or a group of crows is the way it is, purely because it is interesting, is the very same instinct that, aimed at bigger questions, has driven nearly everything humanity has ever discovered.
