Because the awkward truth about "fun science facts" is that a startling number of the ones in circulation are wrong. The word that means the opposite of what you think
The word is factoid, and almost everyone now uses it to mean a small, true, trivial fact, the kind of thing you might find in a list like this. That is not what it was invented to mean. It was invented to mean a falsehood.
The novelist Norman Mailer coined it in 1973, in his biography of Marilyn Monroe. He built it from the word "fact" plus the suffix -oid, which means "resembling, but not the same as", the same -oid that turns "human" into "humanoid" and "aster", a star, into "asteroid", something that merely looks like a star. So a factoid, by its own construction, is a thing that looks like a fact but is not one. Mailer defined it precisely: a factoid was a piece of information with no existence before it appeared in print, a claim that becomes accepted as true simply because it has been published and repeated, not because it is actually so.
In other words, the original factoid was an early name for what we might now call fake news: something that feels factual, spreads because it is repeatable, and was never true in the first place. The dictionary definition that grew from Mailer's word is blunt about it: an item of unreliable information repeated so often that it becomes accepted as fact.
The classic example is one you have almost certainly heard and probably believed: the claim that the Inuit, or "Eskimos", have hundreds of words for snow. It is repeated constantly, it sounds plausible and even profound, and it is essentially a myth, a distortion of how those languages actually work. Why false facts travel better than true ones
Here is the uncomfortable mechanism at the heart of it. A false fact is often better designed for spreading than a true one, because the two are shaped by different pressures.
A true fact has to answer to reality, and reality is frequently complicated, hedged, and a little boring. The honest version of a science fact often comes with conditions: usually, approximately, under certain circumstances, as far as we currently know. Those qualifications are what make it true, and they are also what make it less catchy.
A factoid answers to nothing but its own repeatability. It has been quietly optimised, by the simple process of surviving in conversation, to be as memorable and shareable as possible. It is clean where the truth is messy. It is surprising where the truth is mundane. It offers a tidy, quotable payoff with no awkward caveats, because it was never constrained by having to be correct in the first place. A claim that is simple, startling, and needs no explanation will out-compete a true claim that is complicated and comes with footnotes, in exactly the environment, casual retelling, where most "facts" actually live.
Repetition then does the rest, and it does something genuinely worrying to your judgement. The more often you hear a statement, the more true it tends to feel, regardless of whether it is true, simply because familiarity is comfortable and your mind quietly mistakes that comfort for evidence. A factoid you have heard fifty times feels obviously correct, not because you have ever checked it, but because it has worn a smooth groove in your memory. This is why myths are so hard to kill once they take hold: every repetition, including the ones that come attached to a correction, makes the underlying claim feel a little more familiar and therefore a little more true.
So the survival of a science "fact" in the wild tells you almost nothing about whether it is real. The things that spread are the things built to spread, and truth is not a requirement for the job.
How to tell a fact from a factoid
Once you know factoids exist, you can start catching them, and it becomes a genuinely useful habit. Here is what to watch for.
Be most suspicious of the most satisfying ones. The factoid that is perfectly clean, deeply surprising, and requires no explanation is exactly the profile of a claim optimised for spreading rather than for being true. Real facts are often a little messier and more qualified. When something is suspiciously tidy and quotable, that tidiness is a reason to check, not a reason to trust.
Ask where it actually comes from. A real fact has a source you can trace: a study, a measurement, a reputable reference. A factoid usually traces back to nothing but other repetitions of itself, an endless hall of mirrors of "I read somewhere that". If you cannot find where a claim originates, and everyone citing it is just citing each other, treat it as unproven.
Distrust "scientists say" with no scientists named. Vague authority, "studies show", "experts believe", "scientists say", is the natural habitat of the factoid, because it borrows the credibility of science without exposing any actual, checkable claim. A real finding can point you to who found it. A factoid hides behind a faceless crowd of experts who are never named.
Notice when a fact is doing emotional work. Mailer's original definition included a sharp detail: factoids often exist to manipulate feeling. A "fact" that mainly functions to make you angry, or smug, or comforted, has a motive beyond simply informing you, and that motive is a warning sign. Facts inform. Factoids frequently persuade.
Hold your favourite facts most loosely. The hardest factoids to catch are the ones you already believe and enjoy repeating, because familiarity has already made them feel true. The mark of good thinking is being willing to check the delightful fact you have been telling people for years, and to drop it gracefully if it turns out to be a factoid.
