This family feeds the world

The grasses on this list look like the least important plants imaginable, the green stuff underfoot, the weeds by the road. That impression could not be more wrong. The grass family, known to botanists as Poaceae, is arguably the single most important group of plants for human survival, and here is the fact that proves it. Wheat is a grass. Rice is a grass. Corn, or maize, is a grass. So are barley, oats, rye, sorghum, millet and sugarcane. Even bamboo is a grass.

Sit with what that means. The cereal grains that form the foundation of the human diet, that feed billions of people every single day, are all members of this one plant family. Between them, wheat, rice and corn provide a huge share of all the calories humanity consumes, more than half of the energy in the entire human diet comes directly from grasses. And that is only the direct route. The meat, milk and eggs we eat come largely from animals, cattle, sheep, chickens, that are themselves fed on grasses and grains. So even the parts of your diet that are not obviously grass are, one step back, grass converted into animal.

The story goes deeper still, into the foundations of civilisation itself. Before grass agriculture, people had to roam to find food. After it, they could stay, and everything else followed. The great early civilisations of the world were, almost without exception, built on the cultivation of a cereal grass.

So this unassuming list is nothing less than the botanical foundation of human society. The grasses are not a minor family of humble plants, they are the plants that feed the world and that made settled human life possible in the first place. That patch of lawn and that field of wheat belong to the same family, and it is the most quietly powerful family of plants there is.

Grass grows from the bottom, and that changed history

Here is a small piece of botany with enormous consequences, and it explains something you do every summer without thinking. Grass grows from the bottom, not the top. Almost every other plant grows from its tips, extending upward and outward from the growing point at the end of each shoot. Grass is different, and that single difference shapes the world.

The growing point of a grass plant sits down at the base, near the ground, rather than at the tip of the blade. This means that when the top of a grass blade is cut, bitten, or burned off, the plant is not badly harmed, because its growing point is safe down near the soil, and it simply keeps growing from there, pushing the blade back up. Cut the top off most plants and you remove the very part that grows, damaging it seriously. Cut the top off grass and you have merely given it a trim, while the living, growing base carries on untouched.

This is precisely why you can mow a lawn. Every time you cut the grass, you are slicing off the tops of the blades, and because the growing point is safe below, the grass regrows happily, again and again, all season, which no flowerbed would tolerate. It is also exactly why grass can be grazed. Choosing grass for a real lawn

Establish whether your region calls for cool-season or warm-season grass, and choose only from within the right group, because this single choice determines whether the lawn will thrive or struggle no matter what else you do. Every other consideration is secondary to getting this one right, and most lawn failures trace back to ignoring it.

Be honest about how the lawn will be used. Grasses differ enormously in toughness, and the right choice depends on real use, not wishful thinking. A lawn that will host children and pets and constant play needs a hard-wearing, resilient grass that recovers from being trampled, while a lawn that is mainly to be looked at can be a finer, more delicate type. Choosing a soft, showy grass for a football pitch of a back garden, or a coarse tough grass for an ornamental space, is a mismatch you will regret, so match the grass to the traffic.

Count the water and the work honestly. Different grasses demand very different amounts of water and maintenance, and this matters both for cost and for conscience, especially where water is scarce. Is bamboo really a grass?

Corn and wheat are grasses?
