The one that measures instead of guessing

Every cycle tool you have ever used asked you for your cycle length and then built everything on top of it. Ovulation dates, fertile windows, period predictions, due dates: all of it rests on that one number, and most people typing it in are estimating, or entering 28 because 28 is what everyone says.

This tool works the other way round. It does not predict anything. You give it the start dates of your last two periods, and it hands back the actual gap between them. That gap is your cycle length for that cycle, measured rather than assumed, and it is the number worth carrying to every other tool on the site.

Counting it properly: start to start

Your cycle length is the number of days from the first day of one period to the day before your next period starts. In practice, the tool just measures start date to start date, which comes to the same thing.

Two things trip people up here, and both quietly corrupt the answer:

  • Day 1 is the first day of proper flow. Not the spotting the evening before. If you count light spotting as day 1 some months and not others, your cycle length will look far more erratic than it is.
  • You count to the next period, not to the end of your bleed. The single most common mistake is measuring the period rather than the cycle. Your period might be 5 days. Your cycle is nothing like 5 days.

So if your previous period started on 8 May 2026 and your last one started on 4 June 2026, the gap is 27 days, and 27 is your cycle length for that cycle. The order you enter the two dates in does not matter, since the tool measures the distance between them either way.

What counts as normal

Wider than you would guess from the way 28 gets quoted. There are two commonly used ranges, and they mostly agree:

Under the international definition, cycles shorter than 24 days are called frequent and cycles longer than 38 days are called infrequent. Neither label means something is wrong; they mean it is worth a look. Teenagers are their own case, because the system takes a few years to settle, and by the third year after periods start most cycles have moved into the adult range.

A consistent 25-day cycle and a consistent 34-day cycle are both perfectly ordinary. 28 is a median, not a standard to meet.

One gap is not your cycle length

Here is the honest limitation of what you just calculated. You measured one cycle. Cycles vary, so one measurement tells you about one month, not about you.

Measure three to six in a row and you learn two genuinely useful things. The first is your average, which is the number to feed other tools. The second matters more and almost nobody tracks it: your spread, the gap between your shortest cycle and your longest.

Regularity is defined by that spread rather than by hitting the same number twice. Under the international criteria, cycles count as regular if the difference between your shortest and longest is 7 days or less, if you are between 26 and 41. For ages 18 to 25 and 42 to 45, when cycles are naturally more variable, the allowance is 9 days. So someone aged 43 with cycles of 25, 28 and 34 days has a 9-day spread and is regular for her age. Someone aged 30 with the same cycles would be sitting just outside.

Which means a "wrong" number never really exists here. There is your usual, and there is how much you wander from it.

When the number is worth a conversation

Obstetricians and gynaecologists treat the menstrual cycle as a vital sign, in the literal sense: something to be asked about as routinely as blood pressure, because the pattern reflects what your hormones, thyroid, weight and stress are doing. That framing is useful for knowing when a number is telling you something rather than just being a number.

Worth raising with a doctor:

  • Cycles consistently shorter than 21 days, or consistently longer than 35 to 38.
  • A spread wider than the allowance above, so cycles that are genuinely unpredictable rather than just imperfect.
  • No period at all for three months or more, when you are not pregnant, not breastfeeding, and not on something that stops them.
  • A clear change from your own long-standing pattern that sticks around.
  • Bleeding between periods, or after sex.

None of these is a diagnosis, and the common causes, including polycystic ovary syndrome and thyroid problems, are identifiable and manageable once someone looks. The reason to go is that an irregular cycle is often the first visible sign of something worth catching, and a few months of dates in your notes app is genuinely useful evidence to bring along.

Questions people ask

How many months should I track before trusting my average?

Three is enough to be useful, and six is better, especially if your cycles wander. Note the start date only; nothing else is needed for this. Once you have a few, take the average for other tools and keep an eye on the spread.

My cycle length changed. Is that bad?

Usually not, on its own. A single unusual cycle is ordinary, and stress, illness, travel or a rough month of sleep can all delay ovulation and stretch a cycle. It is a pattern that means something, not a data point. If the change persists across several months, or comes with other symptoms, that is when it is worth asking.

Why does this number matter for anything else?

Because ovulation is timed from your next period, not your last. Get the cycle length wrong and you misplace ovulation, which misplaces the fertile window and shifts a due-date estimate too. It is the input that every other cycle calculation quietly leans on, which is exactly why it is worth measuring once rather than guessing forever.
