Your cycle is not your period
The two words get swapped around constantly, including by people who have been having both for decades, and the distinction is worth thirty seconds because everything else depends on it.
Your period is the bleeding. It lasts a handful of days. Your menstrual cycle is the whole loop, measured from the first day of one period to the day before the next one starts. The period is the opening act, not the show. So a "28-day cycle" does not mean 28 days of anything happening to you; it means 28 days from the start of one bleed to the start of the next, of which maybe five involve a period and the other twenty-three involve a great deal going on quietly.
One rule that follows from this and matters more than it looks: day 1 is the first day of proper flow. Not spotting the evening before, not the day it got heavy. Get day 1 wrong and every date downstream shifts with it.
What happens across the rest of it
Here is the part that makes a cycle make sense. There are actually two cycles running at once, in parallel, driven by the same hormones. One is happening in your ovaries, the other in the lining of your uterus, and they are the reason the phase names people throw around seem to multiply.
In the ovaries:
- The follicular phase runs from the first day of your period until ovulation, while follicles mature and one pulls ahead. This is the half that stretches or shrinks and sets your cycle length.
- Ovulation is the release of the egg, a single event rather than a phase.
- The luteal phase runs from ovulation to your next period. It is the steadier half, usually close to 14 days.
In the uterus, over exactly the same days:
- The menstrual phase is the lining shedding, which is your period.
- The proliferative phase is the lining rebuilding and thickening, driven by rising oestrogen. It lines up with the ovarian follicular phase.
- The secretory phase is the lining being prepared to receive an embryo, driven by progesterone. It lines up with the luteal phase, and when no pregnancy happens, progesterone drops, the lining lets go, and day 1 comes round again.
So if you have ever wondered why one source says "follicular" and another says "proliferative" for what sounds like the same fortnight, that is why. Same fortnight, two different organs being described.
Six cycles, and one assumption baked in
The tool needs only two things: when your last period started, and how many days your cycle usually runs. It then projects your next six cycles by stepping forward one cycle length at a time.
With a last period starting 1 June 2026 and a 28-day cycle, the first row comes out at 29 June, then 27 July, 24 August, 21 September, 19 October, and 16 November. Six months of start dates from two answers.
Now the assumption, because you should know it is there. The tool never asks how long your period lasts, so it assumes 5 days, which is the common average. That means the second date in each row is really the estimated end of your bleed, calculated as five days from the start, rather than the end of the cycle itself. The other thing worth knowing is that accuracy fades as you read down. Row one is projecting one cycle ahead from a number you gave it. Row six is projecting five cycles beyond that, assuming every single one lands exactly on your average. Useful for pencilling in a holiday. Not something to bet on.
Why the dates move
Cycles are not clockwork, and it is worth knowing what is normal drift and what is not. The follicular phase, the first half, is sensitive. When something delays ovulation, your period simply arrives later, and plenty of ordinary things delay ovulation:
- Stress, illness, or a stretch of bad sleep.
- Travel, especially across time zones.
- Big changes in exercise, or gaining or losing a noticeable amount of weight.
Some shifts are structural rather than passing. Cycles are naturally irregular in the first years after periods start, and they become irregular again in the run-up to menopause. After a birth, and especially while breastfeeding, they can take months to return and be erratic when they do. Hormonal contraception changes the picture entirely, and bleeding on the pill is not the same event this tool is modelling.

Questions people ask
What if my cycle length is different every month?
Use your average, and hold the results loosely. Some variation is completely normal, and a spread of a week or so between your shortest and longest cycle is still considered regular for most adults. If yours swing more than that, a projection built on an average will keep missing, which is information in itself rather than a fault in your record-keeping.
Is a 28-day cycle the goal?
No. It is a median, not a target, and it got famous mostly because it is a tidy number. Plenty of healthy cycles sit either side of it, and a consistent 24-day or 34-day cycle is not a problem needing fixing. What matters more is whether yours is roughly consistent for you.
Does this work if I am on hormonal birth control?
Not really. Most hormonal methods work by suppressing the natural cycle, so the bleeding you get on the pill is a withdrawal bleed on a schedule the packet sets, not the end of a cycle like the one described here. Your dates come from your regimen, not from this arithmetic.
