What this tool converts

A GPA and a letter grade are two ways of saying the same thing. This tool turns one into the other: type in a GPA, and it tells you the letter grade it lines up with. The full mapping, with percentage ranges alongside, sits in the conversion table on this page.

It works on a scale up to 4.33, where a 4.0 is an A and a 4.33 is an A+.

How to use it

Type your GPA into the box, anything from 0 to 4.33, and press Calculate. You get the matching letter grade back. For the percentage range that goes with it, find the row in the conversion table on this page.

A GPA that falls between two values takes the lower letter, the same way a 3.8 is still an A-, not quite an A. The tool reads from the floor of each band.

Why a GPA does not always equal one letter

Here is the catch with any GPA-to-letter conversion: there is no single national rulebook. The mapping this tool uses is a common one, but your school may draw the lines a little differently.

Two things move the most. First, the A+ question. This tool puts A+ at 4.33, a notch above a straight A. Plenty of schools cap the scale at 4.0 and treat A+ and A as the same. Second, the percentage bands. One school's A might begin at 93, another's at 90, so a value that reads as an A- here could land in a slightly different band elsewhere. When the conversion matters, your school's official scale is the one to trust.

When you would convert a GPA to a letter

  • Filling out an application that asks for a letter grade when your transcript only shows a GPA.
  • Making sense of a number, since "3.3" lands differently once you see it is a B+.
  • Comparing across systems, where one place talks in GPAs and another in letters.

Going the other way, from a letter grade to a GPA value, is the Letter Grade to GPA Conversion. To turn a full set of courses into a single GPA, use the College GPA Calculator.

Questions people ask

What letter grade is a 3.5 GPA?

A 3.5 sits between a B+ (3.33) and an A- (3.67), so on this scale it reads as a B+. Your school may set the line differently, so check its chart if it is official.

Is an A+ a 4.0 or a 4.33?

It depends on the school. This tool uses 4.33, giving an A+ a small bonus above an A. Many schools cap the scale at 4.0 and treat the two the same.

Why does my converted letter not match my school?

Conversion scales are not universal. The percentage bands and the way A+ is handled vary between schools, so a value can map to slightly different letters in different places. Your school's grading chart is the final word.

What GPA is an A?

On this scale, a 4.0 is an A and a 4.33 is an A+. An A- starts at 3.67. Below that you move into the B range.

How do I convert a letter grade back to a GPA?

Use the Letter Grade to GPA Conversion, which lists each letter's point value and percentage range.
