What this generator does

This picks random years from a range you set. Give it a minimum year, a maximum year, and how many you want, and it returns that many whole years inside the range. It is a quick way to let chance choose a year, or a batch of them, for whatever you have in mind.

How to use it

  1. Minimum Year and Maximum Year. The range to draw from. It starts on a wide default range, which you can narrow to suit.
  2. Number of Years. How many to generate.

Press Calculate and the random years appear. Both endpoints are included, so the minimum and maximum can come up.

Choosing the range

The minimum and maximum are what make the result fit the task. For a history exercise you might set 1900 to 2000 to stay in the twentieth century. For something forward-looking, a range of future years. For test data, whatever span the records would realistically cover. Setting the two ends thoughtfully turns a random number into a year that actually means something for what you are doing.

What people use it for

A few different things. Test data, where a record needs a year and you want a realistic spread rather than the same value over and over. History quizzes and prompts, where a random year gives you something to look up or build a question around. Timeline exercises and brainstorming, where a year out of the blue can spark an idea. Whenever you need one or more years chosen at random within a sensible span, this provides them.

Questions people ask

Can it generate several years at once?

Yes. Set the number of years and it returns that many together, all within your chosen range.

Can I set the range myself?

Yes. Enter your own minimum and maximum year, and every result falls between them, with both ends included.

Can the same year come up more than once?

Yes. Each year is drawn independently, so in a batch the same year can appear more than once, especially over a narrow range.

Can it pick past and future years?

Yes. It simply draws from the range you give, so set it in the past, the future, or across both as you need.
