What the online calendar does

Type in a year and this builds the full calendar for it, all twelve months laid out from January to December, with the days sitting under the right weekdays. It also tells you whether that year is a leap year and how many days it holds. It works for any year you like, past or future, so it is a quick way to pull up a calendar without hunting for the right one.

How to use it

1. Enter Year. The year you want the calendar for.

Press Generate calendar and the twelve months appear, along with a note on the year's length. Press Reset to clear it.

How it lays the year out

For each month it works out how many days the month has and which weekday the 1st falls on, then draws the month as a grid with columns from Sunday to Saturday. The first day is placed under its correct weekday, the rest follow on, and a new row starts each week. Because it checks the real calendar for every month, February comes out right for the year, and the weekday each date lands on is accurate throughout.

It is best for modern Gregorian calendar planning and reference years. Very old historical dates can depend on the calendar system used at the time.

The whole year in one view

The point of a yearly calendar, rather than a single month, is seeing all of it at once. That is handy when you are planning across a year, mapping out terms, trips, or deadlines and wanting to see how they sit relative to each other. It is also the fastest way to check which weekday a date falls on, whether a particular date this year is a Saturday, say, or which Mondays fall in a given month. And for any year that is not the current one, past or future, it gives you a reference calendar on the spot.

The leap year note

Above the months, the tool tells you whether the year is a leap year, with 366 days, or an ordinary one with 365. The only month this changes is February, which gets a 29th in a leap year and stops at the 28th otherwise. A year is a leap year if it divides by 4, with the extra rule that century years must also divide by 400, so 2024 is a leap year and 2000 was, while 1900 was not. The calendar applies that rule, so February always shows the right number of days for the year you entered.

Planning out a year, checking the weekday of dates across it, and pulling up a reference calendar for any year without searching. It suits the moments when a single month is not enough and you want the shape of the whole year in front of you, whether you are looking back at a past year or ahead to one still to come.
