What the age difference calculator does

This one compares two people. You give it two birthdates and it tells you the exact gap between their ages, in years, months, and days, so you can see who is older and by how much. Alongside the gap, it also shows each person's current age, so you get the full picture in one go.

It is the tool for the question that comes up about couples, siblings, and friends: not just "how old is each of us," but "how far apart are we."

How the difference is worked out

Under the hood it uses Moment.js, a date library, to measure the time between the two birthdates, which is the age gap, and to work out each person's age as of today. The gap is the span from the earlier birth to the later one, broken into years, months, and days. It does not matter which birthdate you put first, since the tool takes the size of the gap either way, so you always get a positive, sensible answer.

An example with real numbers

Say the first person was born on 15 March 1990 and the second on 20 August 1994.

• From 15 March 1990, add 4 years to reach 1994, then 5 months to reach August, then 5 days to reach the 20th.
• So the gap is 4 years, 5 months, and 5 days.

The person born in 1990 is the older of the two, by 4 years, 5 months, and 5 days. The tool shows that gap, then each person's own age today underneath.

The gap never changes

Here is a small thing that is oddly satisfying once you notice it. The age difference between two people is fixed for life. If you are four years older than your sister today, you were four years older on the day she was born, and you will still be four years older on both your hundredth birthdays. Both of you age at exactly the same rate, one day per day, so the gap between you never moves. That is why the difference this tool gives you is a permanent fact about the two people, not a number that drifts as the years pass, even though each person's own age keeps climbing.

The most common reason is curiosity about a relationship, the age gap between partners. Beyond that, people use it for the gap between siblings, between friends, between a parent and child, or even the small gap between twins born minutes apart. How is the age difference calculated?

Does it matter which birthdate I enter first?

No. The tool measures the size of the gap, so putting the older or younger person first gives you the same answer.

Does the age gap change as people get older?
