What the metal roofing calculator does

Metal roofing is sold by the panel, but a roof is measured as an area, and the slope means the roof is bigger than the building it sits on. This bridges that gap. You give it the building footprint, the pitch, and the panel size, and it returns the actual roof area, the number of panels, the size in roofing squares, and a cost if you add a price per panel.

The clever part is turning a flat footprint into the real sloped area, which is where the pitch comes in. Below is how it works.

How to use it

  1. Enter the roof length and width. The footprint the roof covers, measured on the ground, each with its unit.
  2. Pick the roof pitch from the list, from flat up to 12 in 12.
  3. Enter the panel length and width for the panels you plan to buy.
  4. Add a price per panel if you want a cost, then press Calculate, or Reset to clear it.

How the panel count is worked out

It happens in two steps. First the calculator takes the footprint area, length times width, and scales it up to the real sloped area using a multiplier for your pitch:

Roof area = footprint area × the pitch multiplier

Then it divides that roof area by the area of one panel and rounds up to whole panels. It also divides the roof area by 100 to give the size in squares, and multiplies the panel count by your price for a material cost.

The pitch multiplier and the roofing square

The pitch multiplier is the heart of it. A sloped roof is the long side of a right triangle sitting over the building, so it is always larger than the flat footprint, and the steeper the pitch, the larger it gets. The multiplier is the square root of one plus the pitch over 12, squared. At a 6 in 12 that comes to 1.118, meaning the roof has about 12 percent more surface than the ground it covers. At a 12 in 12 it is 1.414, about 41 percent more.

The other term worth knowing is the square. In roofing, a square is simply 100 square feet of roof surface, the unit materials and labour are often quoted in. It is not a physical object, just a handy bundle of area, which is why the calculator shows the roof size both in square feet and in squares.

A worked example: a 40 ft by 30 ft roof

Say the footprint is 40 feet by 30 feet at a 4 in 12 pitch, with panels 3 feet by 12 feet.

The footprint is 40 × 30 = 1,200 square feet. The 4:12 multiplier is about 1.054, so the real roof area is around 1,265 square feet, which is 13 squares. Each panel covers 3 × 12 = 36 square feet, so that is 1,265 ÷ 36, rounded up to 36 panels.

Notice the roof is 65 square feet bigger than the footprint, purely from the slope. Order to the footprint and you would come up short.

Ordering, overlap, and waste

The panel count is worked from each panel's full size, so treat it as the starting figure and add a little. Metal panels overlap along their edges where they join, so the width that actually covers the roof is less than the full panel width, and that overlap adds up across a roof. On top of that, cutting panels to fit hips, valleys, and edges leaves offcuts you cannot always reuse.

For those reasons it is worth adding around 10 to 15 percent for overlap and waste, leaning toward the higher end on a roof with lots of angles and cuts. A few extra panels are far cheaper than stopping work to order more and waiting on a colour match.

Questions people ask

How many metal roofing panels do I need?

Work out the sloped roof area, then divide by the area of one panel. For a 1,200 square foot footprint at 4:12 with 3 by 12 foot panels, that is about 36 panels before overlap and waste.

What is a roofing square?

It is 100 square feet of roof surface, a unit used to quote roofing materials and labour. A 1,265 square foot roof is about 13 squares.

Does the roof pitch change how many panels I need?

Yes. A steeper pitch means more actual roof surface over the same footprint, so it needs more material. The calculator scales the area up with a multiplier for your pitch.

How much extra should I order?

About 10 to 15 percent on top, to cover the overlap between panels and the offcuts from trimming around edges and angles.
