What the drywall calculator does
Hanging drywall starts with one question: how many sheets to buy. Too few means a trip back mid-job, too many means awkward full sheets leaning in the garage. This works out the count. You give it the room dimensions and a panel size, say whether the ceiling is included, and it returns the number of sheets, the wall area, and a cost if you add a price per sheet.
It turns a room into a sheet count. Below is how it gets there and why it counts the wall the way it does.
How to use it

- Pick the panel size you plan to hang, from 4 by 8 up to 4 by 12.

How the sheet count is worked out
First the calculator works out the area to cover. The walls are the perimeter of the room times the height, and if you include the ceiling it adds the floor area on top:
Wall area = 2 × (width + length) × height, plus the ceiling if ticked
Then it divides that area by the area of one sheet and rounds up to whole sheets, since you buy drywall whole. A 4 by 8 sheet covers 32 square feet, a 4 by 12 covers 48, and so on. The cost, if you add one, is the sheet count times your price.
Why it counts the whole wall
The calculator measures the full wall area without subtracting for doors and windows, and that is deliberate. You still hang a full sheet across an opening and cut it out afterward, and the piece you cut away usually cannot be reused elsewhere, so counting the opening as covered builds a sensible margin into the order.
That margin is roughly the extra you would otherwise add for waste anyway. Between the round-up to whole sheets and the openings counted as solid, the figure leaves a little room for the offcuts and the odd broken corner, which is what you want when buying drywall.
Choosing a panel size
The 4 by 8 sheet is the default for good reason: it is light enough for one or two people to handle and fits almost anywhere. Longer sheets, the 4 by 10 and 4 by 12, cover more wall in one piece, which means fewer seams to tape and a flatter finished wall, but they are heavy and awkward to carry and lift.
The trade is handling against seams. On a tall or long wall, a longer sheet can run the full length and save a lot of taping. In a tight space or working alone, the 4 by 8 is far easier. The calculator counts whichever you pick, so it is worth matching the sheet to the room and the help you have.
A worked example: a 12 by 14 room
Say the room is 12 feet by 14 feet with 8 foot walls, and you are boarding the ceiling too, using 4 by 8 sheets.
The walls are 2 × (12 + 14) × 8 = 416 square feet, plus a 12 × 14 = 168 square foot ceiling, for 584 square feet in all. Each 4 by 8 sheet covers 32 square feet, so that is 584 ÷ 32, rounded up to 19 sheets.
Leaving the ceiling out would drop it to the walls alone, 416 square feet, or 13 sheets.
Questions people ask
How many drywall sheets do I need?
Work out the wall area, the perimeter times the height, plus the ceiling if you are boarding it, then divide by the area of one sheet. A 12 by 14 room with 8 foot walls and a ceiling needs about 19 sheets of 4 by 8.
How much does a sheet of drywall cover?
A 4 by 8 sheet covers 32 square feet, a 4 by 9 covers 36, a 4 by 10 covers 40, and a 4 by 12 covers 48.
Should I subtract doors and windows?
The calculator does not, on purpose. You cut openings out of full sheets and cannot reuse the offcuts, so counting them as covered leaves a useful margin.
Which panel size should I use?
The 4 by 8 is easiest to handle. Longer sheets mean fewer seams to tape on big walls but are heavier and harder to lift, so match the size to the room and your help.
