What this tool does

Sometimes the hardest part of a design is simply starting. You stare at a blank canvas with no colour in mind, and every choice feels arbitrary. A random palette breaks that deadlock by handing you a set of colours you did not choose, which is often exactly the nudge you need to get moving.

That is what this does. Each time you ask, it generates a fresh palette of colours at random, shown as swatches with their hex codes. You keep generating until something catches your eye, then take that as your starting point. It is less a precise instrument than a way to spark ideas you would not have reached on your own.

How to use it

  1. Generate a palette. The tool produces a random set of colours straight away, each with its hex code.
  2. Keep going until one clicks. Generate again for an entirely new palette, and repeat as many times as you like, since each one is free and instant.
  3. Take the codes you like. When a palette catches your eye, copy the hex codes of the colours you want to keep.

The whole point is volume. Run it many times, let most palettes go by, and save the few that surprise you in a good way. Those are the ones worth building on.

How it works

Under the hood, the tool picks colours at random from across the full colour space, the same range of hex codes your screen can show, and presents them together as a palette. The colour handling is done with TinyColor, which builds the harmonies behind each palette and writes out the hex codes.

Randomness is the feature here, not a limitation. Because the colours are not chosen to please you, they sidestep your usual habits and defaults, which is precisely why a random palette can suggest combinations you would never have assembled deliberately. The trade-off is that not every result will work, which is why generating many and keeping few is the right approach.

Why random palettes help

Everyone has colour habits. Left to ourselves, we reach for the same blues, the same safe neutrals, the same combinations that worked last time, and our palettes start to look alike. A random generator cuts straight through that, because it has no habits and no favourites, so it offers colours your own instincts would have skipped right past.

That is where its real value lies, in breaking creative block and widening your range. A random palette you would never have chosen can still contain one or two colours that are exactly right, or a pairing you had not considered. Even when a whole palette misses, it can knock you out of a rut and point you somewhere more interesting than the blank page you started from.

The way to use it well is as a prompt. Let the generator suggest a direction or a colour you find interesting, then take over from there, keeping what works, dropping what does not, and shaping the rest into something deliberate. The randomness gets you started and breaks your defaults; the refining is what turns the result into a real palette.

Refining a random palette

Once a random palette has given you something to work with, a little editing turns it into a usable scheme. Start by keeping only the colours you genuinely like, often just one or two, and letting the rest go. Then build outward from those, adjusting their lightness and strength so they sit together, and adding neutrals to give the eye somewhere to rest.

It is also worth checking the practical things before you commit. Make sure any colour you plan to use for text has enough contrast against its background to stay readable, and that the palette still works when you reduce it to the few colours you will actually use. A random palette refined this way keeps the spark of the original while losing its rough edges.

When random works best

Random generation shines at the start of a project and whenever you feel stuck. For brainstorming, mood-finding, and exploring directions you would not have considered, it is hard to beat, since its whole job is to surprise you. Artists, illustrators, and anyone chasing a fresh combination will get the most from it.

It is less suited to jobs with fixed constraints. If you already have a brand colour to build around, or strict accessibility requirements to meet, a deliberate palette built from a chosen base will serve you better, since it starts from your requirements rather than from chance. Think of the random generator as the spark for inspiration, and a base-driven palette as the tool for execution.
