What this tool does

Picking a blue is the easy part. The hard part is the next question: what goes with it? A single colour on its own is rarely a design, you need the colours that sit alongside it, the ones that make it look calm, or sharp, or rich, depending on what you are after.

That is what this does. You give it a blue, and it builds whole palettes around it: lighter and darker versions of your blue, and several sets of partner colours drawn from the colour wheel, each shown as swatches with their hex codes ready to copy. Where a shades tool only goes lighter and darker, this one also reaches sideways across the wheel to find the colours that go with your blue.

How to use it

  1. Set your blue. The tool opens on a blue with its Hex shown. Use Change Color or the Color Picker to choose the one you want, or paste any hex in.
  2. Read the palettes it builds. The tool generates several at once from your blue, the lighter and darker sets plus the wheel-based harmonies, so you can compare them side by side.
  3. Copy the codes you want. Each colour in each palette comes with its hex, so you can take whichever set, or whichever single colour, fits your design.

There is also a random option if you want a fresh blue to start from. Whatever blue you land on, the palettes rebuild around it, so it is worth trying a few bases to see which set of partners you like best.

How it works

The tool runs on TinyColor, a colour library with built-in functions for exactly this kind of work. For the lighter and darker sets, it brightens and darkens your blue. For the partner palettes, it does something more interesting: it treats your colour as a position on the colour wheel and rotates around that wheel by set amounts to find colours that have a known relationship to your blue.

That is the whole idea behind colour harmony. Colours that sit at particular angles from each other on the wheel tend to look good together, and those angles have names. The tool simply does the wheel maths for you, so instead of guessing which orange or which purple suits your exact blue, you get the precise partner colours calculated and handed over as hex codes.

The palettes it builds

The tool produces several different palettes from your one blue, and each follows a classic colour-harmony rule. Knowing what each one is for helps you pick the right set.

  • Brighten and darken. The lighter tints and darker shades of your blue, the same family of one colour, useful for backgrounds, text, and depth.
  • Monochromatic. Variations of your blue alone, at different lightness and strength. The calmest, safest palette there is.
  • Analogous. Your blue plus its neighbours on the wheel, the colours just to either side. For blue, that means leaning toward teal on one side and purple on the other, for a cool, harmonious set.
  • Complementary. Your blue plus the colour directly opposite it on the wheel, a warm colour that gives maximum contrast and energy.

  • Triadic. Your blue plus two colours evenly spaced around the wheel, a bold, balanced three-colour set.

There is no single right answer among these. A monochromatic blue palette feels serene and minimal, while a complementary one feels lively and high-contrast, and the job is to match the harmony to the mood you want.

Blue's partner colours

Because the partners come from blue's position on the wheel, they are specific to blue, and they are worth knowing. Blue's complement, the colour directly opposite it, is a warm one: for a pure blue it lands on yellow, and for a lighter, slightly greener blue it lands on orange. Either way, blue's natural high-contrast partner is a warm colour, which is exactly why blue and orange is such a famous, punchy pairing.

Its gentler partners sit close by. Blue's analogous neighbours are the cool colours to either side, cyan and teal on the green side, indigo and violet on the purple side, which is why blues, teals, and purples always look so settled together. And blue's triadic partners, two equal steps around the wheel, pull toward red and green, the other two screen primaries, for a bold, classic three-way split. So a single blue quietly carries a whole map of colours that work with it.

What blue palettes are good for

Blue is the colour of calm, trust, and competence, which is why blue palettes are everywhere in serious, dependable design, banks, healthcare, technology, and corporate brands all lean on it. A blue-led palette starts from a position of feeling safe and professional before you have added anything else.

The harmony you choose then sets the tone. A monochromatic or analogous blue palette stays cool and trustworthy, ideal for clean interfaces and anything that wants to feel calm and ordered. Reach for blue's complementary warm partner when you need energy and a clear call to action against all that calm, the orange button on the blue page being the classic example. So blue gives you a reliable base, and the partner colours decide how much life you add on top.

Building a palette around blue

Start by choosing a harmony to match your goal: monochromatic or analogous for a calm, cohesive look, complementary or triadic when you want contrast and energy. Pick your blue as the base, generate the set, and you have a coherent group of colours that already belong together, rather than a handful you have guessed at.

From there, a simple rule keeps things balanced: let one colour dominate, use a second for support, and keep a third as a small accent, often summarised as roughly sixty, thirty, and ten percent. With a blue-led palette, that usually means blue carries most of the design, a neighbour or neutral supports it, and blue's warm complement appears in small, deliberate doses where you want the eye to go.
