How this 7-letter word generator works

You need a seven-letter word, or a batch of them. Maybe you are training for Scrabble, setting an anagram, or after a word of a particular length. This tool gives you one in a tap, and the page below covers why seven letters is the magic number in the world's most famous word game.

It runs on a hand-checked list of around 250 seven-letter words. Press Generate for one, or set the Number box from 1 to 100 for a batch with no repeats. Each word comes back with a capital letter.

All three filters work. Use Contains to pull words with a certain letter, or Starts with and Ends with to fix the first or last one. The Copy button lifts the whole list at once.

The Scrabble bingo, the best play in the game

Seven is the magic number in Scrabble, because you hold seven tiles on your rack. Play all seven of them in a single turn and you score a fifty-point bonus on top of the word itself. This is called a bingo, and it is the single most powerful play in the game. An average bingo lands somewhere around seventy to eighty points, often more than double what your opponent scores that whole turn.

Serious players build their entire strategy around hunting for bingos. They will pass up a decent short play, holding their best tiles and waiting, because one bingo can swing an entire game. There are more than twenty-five thousand valid seven-letter words in Scrabble, far too many to memorise, but training your eye to spot the words hiding in your rack is the skill that separates good players from great ones. A tool that feeds you seven-letter words is quiet practice for exactly that.

The power tiles that make bingos

Not all letters are equal when you are chasing a bingo. A handful of them, the ones players call the power tiles, combine into common seven-letter words far more easily than the rest. They are S, T, R, E, A, I, N, L, O, and U, and if you have watched people always ask for the same letters on Wheel of Fortune, R, S, T, L, N, E, you already know most of them.

Hold a balanced rack of these and bingos start to appear. Words like NASTIER, RETINAS, and EASTERN all come from that friendly group of letters, and around ninety percent of all bingos have two or three vowels, so a rack with a sensible vowel-to-consonant balance is what you are aiming for. Learn to recognise which of your tiles are the flexible ones, and you will find the fifty-point plays far more often.

Ways people use random 7-letter words

  • Scrabble practice. Training your eye on seven-letter words is direct practice for spotting bingos.
  • Anagrams. Seven letters make a satisfying jumble to scramble and solve.
  • Puzzles. Crosswords and word puzzles are full of seven-letter answers.
  • Teaching. A strong challenge for spelling and vocabulary work.

Getting more from the filters

  • Use the Contains box to pull seven-letter words built around a particular letter.
  • Use Contains to gather words holding a common ending like "ing" or "ers", the shapes many bingos take. The Ends with box takes a single letter, so it pins the last letter rather than a whole suffix.
  • If a filter returns fewer than you asked for, the list does not hold that many under that rule. Loosen it.
