What this tool does

You want to put on a whole album, the way you used to, rather than let an app shuffle singles at you. The problem is you cannot think which one, and so you default to the same record again or give up and hit play on a playlist. This tool decides for you. It pulls an album at random from a hand-picked list, so you have a record to sit with instead of a blank.

Press the button for an album. Press it again for another. Ask for a handful at once if you would rather choose from a short set. Each pick comes with the artist, the title, and the year, so you know exactly what you are putting on.

How to use it

1. Number / Quantity. How many albums to pull at once, from 1 to 100.
2. Generate. Pulls a fresh album, or a fresh set if you asked for several.
3. Starts with, Contains, Ends with. Optional filters that trim the shelf before it picks. Leave them blank to draw from everything.
4. Copy. Copies the album, or your shortlist, to the clipboard as plain text.

An album is on screen the moment the page loads, so there is always something to react to.

How it works

The shelf is fixed and each press pulls an album from it at random, with no repeats inside a single set when you ask for several.

The filters let you aim. Contains keeps any album with your text in it, the artist included, so typing rolling stones brings up Exile on Main St., Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Some Girls. Starts with goes by the opening letter and ends with by the closing one.

What is on the list

It is a hand-picked shelf of around a hundred and forty acclaimed albums, written as artist, title, and year. The range is wide, from rock like Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and Radiohead's In Rainbows, to pop like Taylor Swift's folklore, to hip-hop like Frank Ocean's Blonde and Kendrick Lamar's records, with jazz landmarks like Miles Davis' Bitches Brew thrown in.

These are records chosen because they hold up start to finish, not just for a hit or two. Take it as a strong starting shelf rather than every great album ever made, and use the Contains box when you already have an artist or a record in mind.

Why a whole album, not a shuffle

Streaming quietly changed how most of us listen. The single and the shuffle won, and the habit of sitting with a whole record, in the order the artist laid it out, slipped away. That is a real loss, because a good album is built, not just stacked. The sequence matters, the quiet songs set up the loud ones, and the deep cuts that never became singles are often the best part. Hearing it as one piece is a different experience from catching a track on a playlist.

There is also the everyday reason. With everything available, picking is harder, not easier, so we fall back on the familiar, the freezing effect Sheena Iyengar and Mark Lepper found when shoppers faced two dozen jams bought far fewer than those offered six. A random album is a nudge past that, back toward listening to a record properly. Let the tool choose and you skip the deciding and get to the music.

Picking one and sitting with it

If the first pull is not the mood, a press or two sorts it, and the Contains box helps if you lean a certain way. When you are choosing, weigh whether you want a classic you have somehow never sat all the way through against something newer you have been meaning to hear, since both are good uses of the next forty minutes. Most albums run roughly that long, which is a contained, easy commitment. Then do the one thing that makes this worthwhile: play it front to back, in order, without skipping, and ideally without scrolling your phone the whole time. That is how an album was meant to be heard, and it is where the payoff is.

Is it free, and does it save anything?

It is free with no sign-up, and nothing is kept. The picks run in your browser, so copy an album if you want to hold on to it.

Can I get a few at once?

Yes. Set the quantity to the number you want, up to 100, and press Generate for that many different albums in one pull.

Can I find albums by a certain artist?

Type the artist into the Contains box. Each entry includes the artist, so the shelf trims to that artist's albums on the list.

Are these the best albums ever made?

They are a shelf of widely loved, full-length records, not a ranking, and no one pick is meant to beat another. The point is to land on a great album to sit with, then let it play.
