What the net run rate calculator does
When teams finish a tournament group level on points, somebody still has to go through and somebody has to go home, and net run rate is usually what decides it. It is cricket's version of goal difference in football. This tool works it out. You give it the runs a team has scored and the overs it faced, and the runs it has conceded and the overs it bowled, and it returns the net run rate.
Put simply, it measures how much faster a team scores than it lets the opposition score. A positive number means you are outscoring your opponents over the tournament, and the higher it is, the better your position when the table is tight.

How net run rate is worked out
It is one run rate minus another. You take the rate the team scores at and subtract the rate it concedes at:
Net run rate = (runs scored ÷ overs faced) − (runs conceded ÷ overs bowled)
So if your team scores at 5.74 an over across the tournament and concedes at 4.26, your net run rate is 5.74 minus 4.26, which is plus 1.48. A team that concedes faster than it scores ends up with a negative figure. Simple enough as a sum, but two details decide whether your answer is actually right.
The all-out rule that trips everyone up
This is the rule that catches almost everybody, so hold on to it. If a team is bowled out before it uses up its full quota of overs, you do not use the overs it actually batted. You use the full quota it was entitled to.
Say a side is bowled out for 230 in 42 overs of a 50 over match. For net run rate, you treat that as 230 runs off 50 overs, not 42, because being bowled out early should not flatter a team's rate. The one exception is a team that wins while chasing: if they knock off the target in 42 overs, you use the 42 they actually took. So, bowled out means full quota, chased down means the overs used. Get that backwards and your net run rate will be well out.
Overs are not decimals
The other classic mistake. An over is six balls, so the figure after the decimal point in an over count is balls, not tenths. A team that batted 47.2 overs has faced 47 overs and 2 balls, and 2 balls is 2 divided by 6, which is 0.33, so the true decimal is 47.33, not 47.2. Type 47.2 straight in and the rate comes out wrong.
Before you enter any overs figure with balls in it, convert the balls to sixths: 1 ball is 0.17, 2 is 0.33, 3 is 0.5, 4 is 0.67, 5 is 0.83. This one habit fixes the single most common net run rate error there is.
An example with real numbers
Take one match. Team A bats first and scores 287 for 6 in their full 50 overs. Team B replies with 213 for 8 in their 50 overs.
- Team A scored at 287 ÷ 50 = 5.74 an over
- Team A conceded at 213 ÷ 50 = 4.26 an over
- Team A's net run rate for the match = 5.74 − 4.26 = +1.48
Team B's figure is the mirror image, 4.26 minus 5.74, which is minus 1.48. For a league table you would carry these forward, adding each match's runs and overs into a running total, so that one big win or one heavy loss shifts your tournament net run rate accordingly.
Why it is cumulative, and why it breaks hearts
Net run rate is not really about one game, it is about your whole tournament. The proper figure uses all the runs you have scored and all the overs you have faced across every match, against all the runs and overs on the other side of the ledger. That is why a team can lift its net run rate with one big win and dent it with one bad collapse.
It is also why net run rate is famous for breaking hearts. Because it rewards the speed of your scoring and not the size of your wins, a team can win the same number of matches as a rival and still go out, purely on a slightly slower overall rate. Sides have crashed out of World Cups this way, level on everything that feels like it should matter, separated by a couple of hundredths of a run an over. It is a fair system and a simple one, but on the night it falls, it can feel cruel, and now you know exactly how the number that did it was built.

How is net run rate calculated?
Subtract the run rate a team concedes from the run rate it scores at. Across a tournament, that is total runs scored divided by overs faced, minus total runs conceded divided by overs bowled.
What happens to net run rate if a team is bowled out?
You use the team's full quota of overs, not the overs it actually batted. A side bowled out in 42 of its 50 overs is treated as having faced all 50 for the calculation.
What is a good net run rate?
Any positive figure means you are outscoring your opponents overall, which is what you want. In a tight group, even a small positive number can be the difference between qualifying and going out.
Can a team with a lower net run rate still qualify?
Yes. Net run rate only separates teams that are level on points. A team with more points finishes above one with fewer, however good the other side's net run rate is.
