What the at-bats per home run calculator does
At-bats per home run answers a simple question with a lot of meaning: how often does this hitter go deep? This tool works it out. You give it a player's at-bats and their home runs, and it returns the average number of at-bats between home runs.
It is a clean measure of raw power frequency. A small number means a hitter who clears the fence often, and the smaller it gets, the more feared the bat.

How it is worked out
It is at-bats divided by home runs:
At-bats per home run = at-bats ÷ home runs
So a hitter with 500 at-bats and 40 home runs has 500 divided by 40, which is 12.5. The number reads as a rate of one per so many: this player homers, on average, once every 12 or 13 at-bats. It is the inverse of how you might first think of it, which is exactly the point worth pausing on.
An example with real numbers
Say a slugger has 500 at-bats and 40 home runs in a season.
- At-bats per home run = 500 ÷ 40 = 12.5
So roughly every 12 to 13 times this player steps up, one of those trips ends with a ball in the seats. That is a strong power rate. To feel the scale, the most prolific home run seasons in history pushed this number down toward 6 or 7 at-bats per homer, which is about as often as a hitter can realistically go deep.
Lower is better here
This is the part that flips people around, so hold on to it. With most hitting stats, a bigger number is better. Here it is the opposite. The figure counts how many at-bats a hitter uses up per home run, so the fewer it takes, the more powerful they are. A player at 12 at-bats per home run hits them more often than a player at 20. Read it like a price, the cost in at-bats of each home run, and remember you want that price to be low. For context, the career leaders in this stat sit around 10 to 12 at-bats per home run, while an ordinary hitter might need 30 or 40, and the gap between those is the whole story of power.
Why a rate beats a raw home run total
You might ask why not just count home runs. The answer is fairness across playing time. A raw home run total quietly rewards whoever batted the most. A regular who plays every day has far more chances to homer than a part-timer or someone who missed weeks to injury, so comparing their home run totals is not really comparing their power. At-bats per home run levels that field. By folding in how many chances each hitter had, it shows how often they go deep regardless of how much they played.
