This gives you one. A batch ranges from the essentials everyone owns, the fridge, the washing machine, the kettle, to specialist and old-fashioned devices you may never have heard of.

What waits in this list is bigger than a catalogue of gadgets. Every one of these machines exists to do a job that a human being, almost always a woman, once did by hand, for hours. The story of home appliances is really the story of how domestic labour was slowly handed to machines, and it changed society more than almost any technology you can name.

Before the washing machine, laundry was a full, brutal day of labour, hauling and heating water, scrubbing every item by hand against a board, wringing it out by main force, an exhausting, physically punishing task done weekly, mostly by women, that consumed an entire day of the week. The washing machine on this list did not just make that easier. It gave that entire day back.

Run down the list with this in mind and every entry transforms. The refrigerator replaced a world of daily shopping, of salting and preserving and root cellars, of food constantly spoiling, and the anxious daily labour of keeping things from going off. The dishwasher took over the endless daily grind of washing up by hand after every meal. The vacuum cleaner replaced the heavy work of hauling rugs outside to beat the dust from them. The kettle, the stove, the oven, the water heater each replaced the slow, dangerous, fuel-hungry business of managing fire and heating water for every single domestic need. Even the humble iron replaced hours of labour with heavy flat-irons heated on a stove.

Each of these machines, then, is a piece of frozen time, hours of human labour that no longer have to be spent. And here is the part that gives the list its real weight. That labour was overwhelmingly the unpaid work of women, who for most of history were bound to the home by the sheer quantity of manual work that running a household demanded. Keeping a family fed, clothed and clean was a full-time job of relentless physical toil, and it fell almost entirely on women, which is a large part of why so many were unable to do much else. The appliances on this list are among the technologies that began to break that constraint, mechanising the domestic labour that had consumed women's lives and, in doing so, helping to make possible enormous social changes, including women entering education and paid work in vast numbers. These are not just conveniences. They are among the quiet machines that helped reshape the role of half the population.

Almost every appliance does one of three jobs

The list looks like a bewildering variety of devices, but sort them by what they fundamentally do and nearly all of them fall into just three groups. The whole history of home appliances is really the mechanising of three basic domestic tasks.

Managing temperature, mostly heating. A huge share of this list is devices that heat or cool, because so much domestic work was about controlling temperature. Every oven, stove, kettle, toaster, water heater, radiator and heater, and on the cooling side the fridge, freezer and air conditioner, exists to make something hot or cold. For most of history this meant managing fire and ice by hand, laborious and dangerous, and mechanising it, giving us controllable heat and cold at the turn of a dial, replaced an enormous amount of skilled, constant, hazardous labour.

Cleaning. A second large group handles the endless work of keeping things clean, the washing machine, dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, and their relatives. Cleaning a home and its contents and clothes was a ceaseless, physically hard task, and these machines took over the hardest parts of it. Given how much of traditional domestic labour was simply cleaning, over and over, the machines that automated it were among the most liberating of all.

Preparing food. A third group exists to process and prepare food, the mixers, grinders, blenders, bread machines, food processors and the many specialised cookers on this list. Preparing food from raw ingredients involved a great deal of manual labour, chopping, grinding, mixing, kneading, all by hand, and these devices mechanised those tasks. From the wet grinder to the bread machine, they took the physical effort out of turning raw ingredients into meals.

Nearly every appliance on this list is doing one of these three things, controlling temperature, cleaning, or preparing food. It is a striking realisation, that the vast array of domestic technology comes down to mechanising just three fundamental household jobs, the same three that dominated domestic labour for all of human history. Seen this way, the list is a map of exactly which human tasks we have handed to machines, and they are the oldest and most universal tasks of running a home.

Why the machines did not free us as much as promised

Here is a genuine puzzle that historians of technology have wrestled with, and it makes this list more interesting than a simple story of progress. Given all these labour-saving machines, you would expect people to spend far less time on housework than they did a century ago. Astonishingly, for much of the twentieth century, the time spent on housework did not fall nearly as much as you would think, and by some measures barely fell at all for a long time. The machines saved enormous labour on each task, yet the total time spent on housework proved stubbornly resistant. This is sometimes called the paradox of household technology.

The explanations are revealing. Part of the answer is that as each task became easier, standards rose to fill the gap. When washing clothes was a brutal daily-long task, people wore clothes longer between washes and simply tolerated more dirt, but once the washing machine made laundry easy, expectations of cleanliness rose, and people began washing clothes far more often, so the machine that made each wash trivial was used far more, and the time saved was partly swallowed by doing it more. The same happened across the home, as easier cleaning led to higher standards of cleanliness, and the labour saved per task was eaten by doing each task more thoroughly and more often.

Another part of the answer is that some appliances shifted work rather than removing it, or eliminated the servants and helpers that better-off households once relied on, leaving one person, still usually a woman, to run the whole home alone with machines, where a household might once have shared the labour among several people. And rising expectations were often driven by advertising that sold the machines precisely by raising anxieties about cleanliness and domestic perfection, so the technology and the standards rose together, each pushing the other.

None of this means the appliances did not help, they transformed the physical difficulty and danger of housework beyond recognition, and that matters enormously. But the paradox is a genuine and humbling lesson about technology, that labour-saving devices do not automatically deliver leisure, because human expectations expand to fill the capacity that machines create. The machines on this list made every domestic task vastly easier, and yet the promised age of effortless leisure never quite arrived, because as fast as the machines saved time, our standards for a clean, well-fed, well-run home rose to consume it. It is a pattern worth remembering every time a new device promises to give you your time back.

Buying appliances that are worth it

Spend on the ones you use every day. Appliances vary wildly in how much you will actually use them, and that should drive your spending. The machines you rely on daily, the fridge, the washing machine, the oven, the kettle, are worth investing in for quality and durability, because a good one used constantly repays itself many times in reliability and long life. The single-purpose gadgets used twice a year do not warrant the same outlay, and this is the first question to ask, how often will this genuinely be used.

Running cost matters as much as the price. An appliance's purchase price is only part of its true cost, because the ones that run constantly also consume energy and water constantly, and that adds up substantially over years of use. A cheap but inefficient fridge or washing machine, running day in and day out, can cost far more over its life than a pricier efficient one, so for heavily used appliances it genuinely pays to check energy and water efficiency ratings, not just the sticker price. The cheapest appliance is often not the cheapest to own.

Be wary of single-purpose gadgets. This list is full of highly specialised devices, and the kitchen-gadget market thrives on tempting you with a machine for every conceivable task. Before buying a device that does only one narrow thing, ask honestly whether you will use it enough to justify the money and, just as importantly, the space, because these single-use gadgets have a way of being used once or twice and then cluttering a cupboard forever. Often a good basic multipurpose tool does the job without the clutter, and the specialised gadget is a solution to a problem you do not really have.

Match the appliance to your actual space and life. Appliances come in vastly different sizes and capacities, and the right choice depends on your real household, not an aspirational one. A large family needs different capacity from a single person, a tiny kitchen cannot house what a big one can, so measure your space and think honestly about your real needs before buying, since an appliance too big for your space or too small for your household is a daily frustration. The best appliance is the one that fits the life and the home you actually have.

Consider repairability and longevity. A quietly important factor, often overlooked, is how long an appliance will last and whether it can be fixed when it breaks. Some appliances are built to last decades and be repaired, while others are essentially disposable, designed to be thrown away when they fail, which is both expensive over time and wasteful. Where you can, favour appliances known for durability and repairability, particularly for the big, expensive, everyday machines, because one that lasts twenty years and can be mended is far better value, and far kinder to the planet, than a cheap one replaced every few years.
