What the bird generator does

This gives you one. Pull a batch and it ranges from the sparrow outside to a shoebill to names you have never met.
What follows is three things about birds that ought to be more famous than they are. They are not descended from dinosaurs, they are dinosaurs, still here. Many of them can sing two different notes simultaneously, using an organ you do not have. And they belong to a tiny club of animals that can learn a sound, which is the same club that includes you.

These are the dinosaurs that lived
Start with the fact that reframes the whole list. A bird is not like a dinosaur, and is not descended from dinosaurs in the loose way people say humans are descended from apes. A bird is a dinosaur, in the exact way you are a mammal. The category never stopped applying.
Here is the shape of it. Dinosaurs were an enormous group, and one branch of them were the theropods, the two-legged, mostly meat-eating ones that include Tyrannosaurus and Velociraptor. Somewhere inside that branch, some small feathered theropods took to the air. When the asteroid hit and wiped out the big dinosaurs, that one feathered twig survived. And it kept going, and it radiated, and it became every bird alive today.
So a sparrow sits inside the theropod family tree next to Velociraptor, closer to a Tyrannosaurus than a Tyrannosaurus is to a Stegosaurus. The pigeon on your windowsill is a small, modern, flying dinosaur, and that is not a poetic flourish, it is the plain classification. The extinction was not total. It took the giants and left one branch, and that branch is on this list, roughly eleven thousand species of it.
Once you hold that, birds look different. The scaly legs are the reptilian past showing through. The way a chicken moves its head, the way a heron waits and strikes, the raptor's foot, the way an ostrich runs, these are dinosaur behaviours performed by living animals. When you fill a feeder, you are feeding dinosaurs. When you hear the dawn chorus, that is the sound of the survivors of the greatest catastrophe in the history of animals, singing.
A bird can sing two songs at once
Now something most people never learn, and it is extraordinary.
You make sound with a larynx, a voice box at the top of your windpipe, and so do mammals and reptiles and amphibians. Birds do not. Birds have a completely different organ, lower down, called the syrinx, and it sits right at the point where the windpipe splits in two to go into the two lungs.
And that position is the magic. Because the syrinx sits at the fork, it has two sound sources, one on each branch, and many birds can control the two sides independently.
Which means a songbird can sing two different notes at the same time. Not quickly alternating. Simultaneously. It can harmonise with itself, sing a duet alone, produce two separate melodies at once from one small body. Some birds hold a continuous note on one side while trilling a rapid pattern on the other. A single thrush or wren can do things no human singer can approach, because a human has one voice and the bird effectively has two, wired to be played together.
This is a large part of why birdsong is so rich and so fast and so impossible to whistle back accurately. You are trying to reproduce, with one voice box, sounds that were made with two. Some of the most elaborate songs on this list are physically beyond imitation for exactly that reason. The bird is not just a better singer. It has more instruments.
And the syrinx is ancient. A fossil syrinx has been found in a bird that lived alongside the non-avian dinosaurs, tying this two-voiced organ straight back to the deep past on the branch that survived. So the two-part song of a garden bird is old technology, carried across the extinction along with the animals themselves.
Most animals cannot learn a sound, and birds can
Here is the third thing, and it connects birds to you more closely than almost any other animal.
Most animals cannot learn their sounds. A dog barks, a cow moos, a cat meows, and they are born knowing how. Raise them in total silence and they still make their species' sounds correctly, because the sounds are built in, not learned. This is true of the overwhelming majority of animals. Their voice is instinct, fixed at birth.
A very small number of animal groups are different. They are vocal learners, meaning the young have to hear the sounds and practise them to get them right, and if they do not hear them, they never develop them properly. This is a rare and special ability, and the list of animals that have it is short. Some birds. A few marine mammals like whales and dolphins. Elephants, bats, and a couple of others. And humans.
That is almost the whole club. And the songbirds on this list are its star members.
A young songbird learns its song much the way a baby learns to speak. It listens to adults of its kind during a sensitive early window. It babbles, producing rough, formless practice sound that researchers literally call subsong, the bird equivalent of a baby's babbling. It gradually refines that towards the adult song it heard. And crucially, a songbird raised in silence grows up unable to sing its song correctly, exactly as a human raised without language struggles to acquire it later.
The parallel is so close that songbirds are one of the main ways scientists study how human speech learning works, because the underlying process is startlingly similar, down to shared genes involved in both. Different birds even have regional dialects, local versions of a song passed down and drifting over generations, which is culture, the same basic thing that gives human languages their accents.
So on this list, quietly, are some of the only other creatures on Earth that do what you did as an infant. They learn their voice by listening and practising, they can get it wrong, they have accents, and they pass their songs down the generations. Most of the animal kingdom is born already knowing what to say. Birds, like us, have to learn.

Starting to actually see them
If the generator handed you a bird and it sparked something, birdwatching is the easiest serious hobby in the world to start, and everything above makes it richer.
You already have everything you need. Birds are the one form of wildlife that is genuinely everywhere, outside every window, in every city, all year. You do not need to travel or buy anything to begin. You need to start noticing what was always there, which is why it is the most accessible way into the natural world there is.
Learn by sound as much as by sight. Given the syrinx section, this makes sense, most birds are heard long before they are seen, and experienced birdwatchers identify far more by ear than by eye. Learning even a handful of common songs transforms a walk, because the hedge that seemed empty turns out to be full of birds announcing themselves. Free apps can now identify a bird from its song through your phone, which a decade ago would have seemed like magic.
Start with the common ones. The instinct is to want the rare and spectacular, but the real skill is knowing the ordinary birds cold, because you cannot spot the unusual one until you know what usual looks like. The everyday birds on this list, the sparrows, robins, pigeons, crows, are where every birdwatcher actually starts, and they are more interesting up close than their familiarity suggests.
A cheap pair of binoculars changes everything. The single upgrade worth making. You do not need expensive ones to begin, and the difference between watching a bird as a distant shape and seeing its actual face and colours is the difference between a hobby that fades and one that grabs you. It is the one small purchase that pays for itself immediately.
Questions people ask
Are birds really dinosaurs, or just related to them?
Really, literally dinosaurs, in the same way you are literally a mammal rather than merely mammal-related. Birds are the surviving branch of the theropod dinosaurs, so the group dinosaur never went fully extinct, it just lost its large members and kept its feathered flying twig. Saying a bird is descended from dinosaurs slightly undersells it, the way saying you are descended from mammals would. A bird does not come from dinosaurs. It is one, still going.
Can any bird sing two notes at once, or only some?
The two-sound-source anatomy is widespread because it comes from where the syrinx sits, but the degree of independent control varies enormously. Songbirds, the large group that includes thrushes, warblers, wrens and finches, have the most muscular, finely controlled syrinxes and are the virtuosos, capable of genuine simultaneous two-part song. Simpler birds have less independent control. So not every bird is a two-part singer to the same degree, but the basic dual-source design is a general bird feature, and the songbirds push it furthest.
How do parrots learn to talk, then?
Through exactly the vocal-learning ability in the section above, which parrots have in abundance. They are among the strongest vocal learners in the animal kingdom, which is why they can pick up human words at all, they are learning and reproducing sounds by ear, the same skill a songbird uses for its song and you use for speech. A parrot mimicking you is not a trick, it is a genuinely rare cognitive ability that almost no other animals possess, being pointed at human noises instead of parrot ones.
How many kinds of bird are there?
Roughly eleven thousand species, and the number shifts as genetic work splits populations once thought to be one species into several. They are spread across every continent including Antarctica and almost every habitat, from the ocean to the desert to the highest mountains. For a single surviving branch of the dinosaurs, that is a remarkable spread, and it makes birds one of the most successful groups of large animals on the planet.
Can I use this for a school project?
That is a lot of why it is here, and birds are an excellent subject because there is genuine, current, fascinating science behind them.
