What this does

So you want a random horse breed, for a quiz, some research, or a bit of fun. This picks one from a big list, over three hundred breeds from around the world. Tap Generate for one, set a number for a batch, and use the filters to steer toward a letter or a word. It is a good way to see just how many horse breeds there are beyond the famous few.

How to use it

  1. Set Number / Quantity for how many breeds you want, from 1 to 100.
  2. Tap Generate, and Copy any you want to keep.
  3. Use the Starts with, Contains, and Ends with boxes to narrow the list.

Generate as often as you like to keep turning up new ones.

How it works

The tool holds a built in list of horse breeds, and your browser's random generator, Math.random, picks from it. Set a filter and it trims the list to matching breeds before picking. It all runs on your device, and Copy saves your picks. The usual honest note, Math.random is pseudo random, which is exactly what a random breed picker needs.

The main types of horse breed

There are several hundred horse breeds worldwide, and it helps to know they tend to fall into a few broad groups. Heavy or draft horses, like the Shire and the Clydesdale, are the big, powerful ones bred to pull ploughs and carts. Light horses, like the Arabian and the Thoroughbred, are the leaner, faster ones bred for riding and racing. And ponies, like the Shetland, are the smaller, sturdy breeds, which are not just baby horses but a category of their own. Each breed within those groups was shaped for a place and a purpose, from war and farm work to herding, racing, and showing, which is how the world ended up with so many.

What people use it for

Horse breed quizzes and games are a natural fit, where you want a random breed to identify or draw. People also use it when they are learning about horses or thinking about which breed might suit them before researching in earnest. Writers and artists use it for inspiration, and plenty just generate breeds for the pleasure of discovering ones they had never heard of.
