What this tool does

A 5-digit PIN sits in the gap between the everyday 4-digit code and the 6-digit ones used for verification. This tool generates a random one for you in an instant. Refresh for another, and copy it when you have the one you want.

How to use it

The tool gives you a code straight away. Press refresh for a new five-digit number, and copy to take it with you. The length is set at five, so there is nothing else to adjust.

How it works

Every digit is generated by your browser's cryptographically secure random source, so the result is genuinely unpredictable, with no sequence or pattern behind it. Nothing leaves your device; the code is built right where you are.

The step up from four

Adding a single digit does more than it appears to. A 5-digit PIN has 100,000 possible values, ten times the 10,000 of a 4-digit code. That is the rule with PINs: each digit you add multiplies the number of possibilities by ten, so moving from four to five is a real, ten-fold jump in how hard the code is to guess, not a small tweak.

That makes five digits a sensible pick for a keypad or system that does not lock after a few failed attempts. In those cases there is no attempt limit doing the heavy lifting, so the size of the code itself has to carry more of the weight, and the extra digit genuinely helps.

Where 5-digit codes show up

You will run into five-digit codes on safes, alarm panels, gate and garage keypads, and assorted access-control systems, the places where four digits feels a little light but six is more than the job needs. If you would rather choose the length yourself, the Random Pin Code Generator slides anywhere from 4 to 12 digits.

Questions people ask

How many combinations does a 5-digit PIN have?

100,000, from 00000 to 99999. That is ten times the 10,000 of a 4-digit PIN, because each added digit multiplies the total by ten.

Is a 5-digit PIN better than a 4-digit one?

It is ten times harder to guess, which matters most on systems without a strict limit on attempts. Where attempts are tightly capped, like a bank card, the difference in practice is smaller.

Where are 5-digit PINs used?

Often on safes, alarm systems, and gate or garage keypads, where a slightly longer code suits the setting. It is the practical middle ground between four and six digits.
