What people make Roman numerals for
Roman numerals have a timeless, formal look, which is why they show up in so many personal and decorative places. The most common by far is a meaningful year: a wedding date, an anniversary, a birth year, a graduation. From there they turn up on tattoos and engraved jewellery, on watch and clock faces, as the chapter numbers in books, on building cornerstones and monuments, in the names of sporting events and film sequels, and as the copyright year tucked at the end of film credits. Whenever a plain number would feel too ordinary, Roman numerals lend it a bit of weight.
Writing a year
Since years are the usual reason, it helps to see one built. Take 1985. It breaks into a thousand, nine hundred, eighty, and five:
- 1000 is M
- 900 is CM
- 80 is LXXX
- 5 is V
Put together, 1985 is MCMLXXXV. A rounder year is shorter: 2000 is simply MM. The generator handles the whole thing for you, but seeing the pieces makes the result feel less like a riddle and more like something you could check yourself.
The letters, quickly
If you want to glance over what the letters mean, there are only seven. I is 1, V is 5, X is 10, L is 50, C is 100, D is 500, and M is 1000. A smaller letter in front of a larger one means subtract, which is why 4 is IV and 9 is IX. That is enough to make sense of almost any numeral you will generate here.
Double-check before you engrave
One friendly word of caution, since so many of these end up somewhere permanent. Before you commit a numeral to a tattoo, a ring, or anything you cannot easily redo, take a moment to confirm it. Read the result back against the number you meant, or run it through the reverse direction to make sure it lands on the right value. The generator is reliable, but a permanent marking is worth a second look, especially for longer years where one stray letter changes the whole thing.
Questions people ask
How do I write a year in Roman numerals?
Break the year into thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones, and write each part in Roman symbols. So 1985 is M for 1000, CM for 900, LXXX for 80, and V for 5, giving MCMLXXXV.
What is the year 2000 in Roman numerals?
MM. It is simply two thousands, each written as M, with nothing else to add.
Can it do any number?
Any whole number from 1 to 3999, which covers every year you are likely to need. There is no zero or negative, as Roman numerals have neither.
Is it reliable for a tattoo or engraving?
Yes, the numeral it gives is correct. Even so, for anything permanent it is worth reading the result back or checking it in reverse first, since a single wrong letter would be hard to undo.
