What this calculator does

What scientific notation is
Scientific notation is a compact way of writing numbers that are very large or very small. Instead of writing out a long string of zeros, you write the number as a value between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10. So 300,000 becomes 3 times 10 to the power 5, and 0.0002 becomes 2 times 10 to the power minus 4. The power of 10 records the order of magnitude, how many places the decimal point has shifted. This keeps huge and tiny numbers readable, which is why science and engineering lean on it so heavily.
How to type it in
On a keyboard, the times 10 to a power part is usually written with the letter e, which stands for exponent. So 3 times 10 to the power 5 is typed as 3e5, and 1.1 times 10 to the power minus 7 is typed as 1.1e-7. A capital E works just as well. This tool understands that shorthand, so you can enter numbers in the same form your calculator or spreadsheet would use. You can also just type an ordinary number like 6.78 if that is easier; the tool handles both.

A worked example
Suppose you enter 3e5 and 2e5 and choose addition. The tool reads these as 300,000 and 200,000, adds them, and returns 500,000. Now try multiplication with 4e3 and 2e2: those are 4,000 and 200, and multiplying them gives 800,000. Notice how the tool lets you enter the numbers in their short powers-of-ten form while it takes care of combining them.
Why calculate this way
Working in scientific notation is not just tidier, it is often the only sensible way to handle the numbers that turn up in real problems. Distances between stars, the size of an atom, populations, and data volumes all run to many digits, and writing them out in full invites mistakes with miscounted zeros. Scientific notation keeps the significant part of the number separate from its scale, so the arithmetic stays manageable.
