What you are actually choosing between
The options within each component are not variations on a theme. They are different exercises with different demands, and the pairings tell you what the Air Force decided it cared about.
Push-ups against hand-release push-ups. The ordinary push-up gives you one minute and lets you use your rhythm: at the bottom you can bounce slightly, and the elastic recoil of your chest gives back a little free energy. The hand-release version gives you two minutes but takes that away. You flatten out at the bottom, lift your hands clear of the ground, put them down, and press. Every repetition starts from a dead stop, from nothing. So the choice is a minute of fast, rhythmic, momentum-assisted work against two minutes of slower, honest, strictly-dead-stop work. Different qualities entirely, and the Air Force will accept either as proof you can push.
Sit-ups against cross-leg reverse crunches against a plank. This is the most interesting menu, because the three options are not even the same kind of exercise. The first two are dynamic: you move, repeatedly, for time. The plank is isometric: you brace and refuse to move. Offering both is the Air Force declining to take a side in an argument every other service has now settled. The 1.5-mile run against the 20-metre shuttle. This is the biggest gap of the three, and it deserves its own section.
The strangest option: the beep test
The 20-metre shuttle run is the thing most people know as the beep test or the bleep test, and if you went to school anywhere in the Commonwealth you have probably lain on a gym floor at the end of one.
You run between two lines twenty metres apart. A recording beeps. You have to reach the far line before the next beep. Simple, until you notice the design: the beeps get closer together. It starts as a jog and becomes a sprint, and it does not stop when you are tired. It stops when you can no longer reach the line in time. There is no pacing yourself and no finish line to see coming. It ends when you break.
Contrast that with the 1.5-mile run, where you know the distance, you know roughly your pace, and you can manage the whole thing as one problem. You can be clever. You can hold back and finish strong. The shuttle removes cleverness. The tape decides the pace, the pace becomes impossible, and the only variable is how long you last.
Those are measuring related but distinguishable things. The run rewards steady aerobic endurance and pacing judgement. The shuttle punishes anyone who cannot repeatedly accelerate, decelerate, and turn, over and over, while progressively more exhausted. Every one of those turns is a full stop and a restart, which is anaerobically brutal in a way that running in a straight line never is.
Its real advantages are practical, though, and that is likely why it is here. It needs twenty metres of indoor floor rather than a measured outdoor course. It works in bad weather, on a small base, in the dark. And it is self-terminating: nobody has to marshal a course or time individuals, because the tape does both.
The problem with letting people choose
Now the honest difficulty, because a menu creates one and it is unavoidable.
If twelve combinations are all valid tests, the twelve had better be equivalent. If they are not, then two airmen with identical scores are not equally fit, and the difference between them is not fitness. It is which options they picked.
And exact equivalence between a plank and a set of sit-ups is not really achievable. They are different physical qualities. Any conversion between them is a judgement call encoded in a scoring table, and someone had to decide how many seconds of bracing is worth how many repetitions of moving. There is no fact of the matter that settles it.
Which means people will optimise, and it would be strange if they did not. Every airman knows which of the options suits them, and picking your best event is not cheating; it is the system working exactly as designed. But it does mean the score is measuring your fitness and your event selection, mixed together, in an unknown ratio.
The counterargument is decent, and probably right. A test everybody can take, that does not force someone with an injured back to do sit-ups or someone on a small base to find a measured course, is worth more than a perfectly comparable test that generates avoidable injuries and excuses. And this is a general fitness screen for an entire service, most of whom are not going to be sprinting anywhere. It is not a selection tool for a combat role, and it does not have to carry that weight. The Air Force took the other road: measure three broad qualities, let people choose how, accept some fuzziness, and get the whole service tested without a fight. Given how the alternative went, that is not obviously the wrong call.
How to pick, and how to train
Some practical thoughts, given you have a choice to make.
Pick honestly, then train the other one anyway. Choosing your strongest event is sensible and everybody does it. But the reason you are weak at the other one has not gone away because you avoided it, and the test is a proxy for being fit rather than a thing that matters in itself. If the plank is your escape from sit-ups because your core is weak, the plank has not fixed your core.
The hand-release push-up is the better training target, whichever you take on the day. It removes momentum and forces honest repetitions, so training for it builds the strength that also carries the ordinary version. The reverse is not as true.
The plank is the better core exercise, on the current evidence. Not merely the safer one. Bracing against movement is what a core does in life, and it does not repeatedly load your lumbar spine into flexion. The Army and the Navy both landed on the plank independently within about two years of each other, which is usually a sign.
The shuttle is much harder than people expect, and is a bad choice for a first attempt if you have not done one. Its structure hides the ending: you feel fine, then you do not, then it is over. If you have trained by running in straight lines, the turns will surprise you.
And the usual caveat for this whole section: Air Force fitness standards, the scoring tables and the consequences of a poor result are set by the Air Force and are revised periodically. This calculator is for training and for a rough read on where you stand. Your standards come from your chain of command.
Questions people ask
Can I really choose my events?
Yes. Two upper body options, three core options and two cardio options, which is twelve valid combinations of the same test. That flexibility is deliberate.
Which combination is easiest?
It depends entirely on you, which is rather the point of the design. The scoring tables are meant to make the options comparable, though exact equivalence between a plank and a set of sit-ups is not really achievable.
What is a hand-release push-up?
At the bottom you flatten to the ground and lift your hands clear before pressing up. It removes the bounce, so every repetition starts from a dead stop. Harder per repetition, which is why you get two minutes rather than one.
Is the shuttle run easier than the 1.5-mile run?

Should I pick the plank?
On current evidence it is the best of the three core options, and not only because it is gentler on your back. Bracing against movement is closer to what a core actually does than repeatedly folding yourself is.
