The percentage that deals are argued over
If you ever sit in a room where a business is being bought or sold, this is the number that will be on the whiteboard. EBITDA margin takes a company's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation, and expresses them as a share of revenue.
It earns that prominence because it strips out nearly everything that makes two companies awkward to compare. Financing, tax position, and the accounting treatment of past investment all come out, so what remains is a fairly clean read on how much of each sales dollar the operation converts into earnings. Buyers, lenders, and private equity firms lean on it heavily, and this calculator gives you the same figure they will be looking at.
Two figures from the same period
EBITDA is your earnings before those four items, which the EBITDA Calculator will build for you from revenue and expenses if you do not already have it.
Net revenue is sales after returns, refunds, and discounts, not the gross figure.
The one discipline worth keeping is consistency. Use the same period for both, and calculate EBITDA the same way each time you come back. Because EBITDA is not a standardised measure, a margin that moves because you quietly changed what you excluded is worse than no measurement at all, and it is an easy trap when you are the one producing the number.
Twenty-two cents in the dollar
Take a company with EBITDA of 1,100,000 on net revenue of 5,000,000.
That is an EBITDA margin of 22.00 percent. So for every dollar of sales, 22 cents survives as earnings before financing, tax, and the charge for assets wearing out. It is a genuinely useful figure for comparison, because two rivals with different debt loads and different depreciation policies can be lined up against each other on this basis without either being unfairly flattered.
What it is not is 22 cents you can spend. Interest, tax, and the real cost of replacing equipment all still have to come out of it. The margin is a measure of operating quality, not of money available.
The gap against your EBIT margin is a measurement in itself
Here is something worth doing that almost nobody bothers with, and it costs you one extra calculation.
Work out your EBIT margin as well as your EBITDA margin, and look at the distance between them. For the company above, the EBIT margin is 16.00 percent and the EBITDA margin is 22.00 percent, a gap of exactly 6 percentage points. That gap is not incidental. The only difference between the two measures is depreciation and amortisation, so the gap is precisely D&A as a share of revenue. This company's D&A is 300,000 against 5,000,000 of revenue, which is exactly 6 percent. It has to come out that way.
Which makes the gap a quick read on how capital-intensive a business is. A narrow gap means an asset-light company whose earnings barely change whether you count depreciation or not, so the two margins tell nearly the same story. A wide gap means a business carrying heavy assets, where a flattering EBITDA margin sits on top of a much more sober operating margin, and where the difference between them will eventually have to be spent on replacing things.
So a company boasting a strong EBITDA margin with a large gap beneath it deserves the obvious follow-up question, which is what its actual capital spending looks like. If yearly capital spending runs close to the depreciation charge, that 6 points is a real recurring cost that the EBITDA margin is politely omitting. If it runs well below, the depreciation may genuinely be overstating what the business needs, and the higher margin is closer to the truth. One extra calculation, and you know which conversation you are in.
Why the sector decides what counts as healthy
You will see 15 to 25 percent quoted as a good EBITDA margin. Treat that as almost meaningless without knowing the industry, because the spread between sectors dwarfs the spread between good and bad companies within one.
Software and similar businesses commonly run somewhere in the twenties to forties, because serving one more customer costs them almost nothing. Property trusts run far higher still, since their revenue arrives as rent against relatively little operating cost. Professional and business services tend to sit in the mid-teens, capped by the fact that skilled human time is their main input and does not get cheaper with scale. Restaurants, retail, and distribution live in single digits to the mid-teens on thin pricing and heavy labour. Airlines land around 10 percent, which is higher than most people guess, and which sits on top of famously brutal fuel, labour, and aircraft costs with a very wide gap to actual cash.
Two forces explain most of that spread. The first is operating leverage: businesses with high fixed costs and low variable costs expand margins quickly as revenue grows, while businesses whose costs rise with every sale barely move. The second is asset intensity, which is the gap discussed above. Between them they set the range your business can realistically play in, and the useful benchmark is your direct competitors rather than the market at large.
Two companies at 20 percent, opposite verdicts
To make the point stick, imagine two businesses that both report a 20 percent EBITDA margin.
The first is a distributor in a trade where rivals earn 4 percent. It is doing something remarkable, and the number should prompt you to work out what. The second is a software company in a field where peers run at 35 percent. It is struggling, and the identical 20 percent is a warning rather than a triumph. Same figure, opposite meanings, and no amount of staring at the number alone would tell you which was which.
That is why the sequence matters more than the figure. Compare against the sector first, then look at which way your own margin has been moving over several periods, then ask what is producing it. A margin rising because of genuine pricing power or scale is worth a great deal. One rising because maintenance was deferred is borrowed from next year, and in a metric that already excludes the cost of assets wearing out, that particular form of borrowing is especially easy to hide.
Questions people ask
How do you calculate EBITDA margin?
Divide EBITDA by net revenue and multiply by 100. EBITDA of 1,100,000 on revenue of 5,000,000 gives a 22 percent margin.
How is it different from EBIT margin?
EBIT margin subtracts depreciation and amortisation; EBITDA margin does not. The difference between the two, measured in percentage points, is exactly your depreciation and amortisation as a share of revenue, which makes it a quick indicator of how asset-heavy the business is.
What is a good EBITDA margin?
Entirely sector-dependent. Software runs in the twenties to forties, services in the mid-teens, retail and distribution in single digits, airlines around ten percent. Compare against direct competitors rather than a universal threshold.
Can an EBITDA margin be misleadingly high?
Yes, particularly for capital-heavy businesses. Because the measure excludes the cost of assets wearing out, a company with large ongoing capital spending can post a healthy margin while relatively little cash actually remains. Check capital spending alongside it.
