Twelve notes, thirty keys

Western music has exactly twelve notes. Count the keys on a piano from any note up to the same note an octave higher and you pass through twelve steps before the pattern repeats. Twelve, and no more.

So you might expect twelve keys. Instead there are thirty, and the reason is a genuinely interesting quirk of how the system is written down.

Start with major keys. There is one with no sharps or flats at all, C major. Then there are seven built with increasing numbers of sharps, from one sharp up to seven. And seven more built with increasing numbers of flats, from one up to seven. One, plus seven, plus seven, makes fifteen major keys.

Every major key has a partner minor key, which doubles the count. Fifteen major and fifteen minor make thirty keys in total, which is exactly how many this generator draws from.

Thirty written keys, built on only twelve actual notes. The gap between those two numbers is where a lot of music theory hides.

Two names for the same sound

The gap opens up because some keys are the same sound written two different ways.

Take the key with seven sharps and the key with five flats. Play them and they are identical, note for note, on any instrument. But one is written as C sharp major and the other as D flat major, and in theory they are treated as different keys even though your ear cannot tell them apart. Musicians call these enharmonic keys: same pitches, different spelling.

Why keep both? Because the spelling matters to the person reading the music. A passage written with five flats is far easier to read than the same passage crammed with seven sharps, so a composer chooses whichever spelling keeps the page clean. It is like the difference between writing a number as a fraction or a decimal. Same value, different notation, and you pick the one that suits the situation.

There is even a neat piece of arithmetic buried in it. Take any major key and the key a semitone below it, and the sharps of the first plus the flats of the second always add up to seven. The system is more orderly than it first appears.

This is the same principle of enharmonic spelling that shapes individual chords, and it is worth understanding because it explains why written music has more names than there are sounds.

The circle that organises them all

Thirty keys sounds like chaos to memorise, but they arrange themselves into one of the most elegant diagrams in music: the circle of fifths.

Imagine a clock face. Put C major at the top, where twelve would be. Move one step clockwise and you reach the key with one sharp. Another step, two sharps. Each clockwise step adds a sharp, and the reason it is called the circle of fifths is that each step also jumps up by an interval of a fifth. Go counterclockwise from the top instead, and each step adds a flat.

Keep going either way and you meet at the bottom, where the sharp keys and the flat keys arrive at the same place, which is exactly where those two-names-for-one-sound keys live.

The circle is not just a memory aid. It maps how closely related keys are. Keys sitting next to each other on the circle share almost all their notes and sound natural moving between one another, which is why so much music travels around the circle rather than jumping across it. Neighbouring keys are close relatives; keys on opposite sides are distant strangers.

Every major key has a shadow

The pairing of major and minor keys is worth understanding on its own, because it is one of the most useful relationships in music.

For every major key there is a minor key that uses the exact same notes. C major and A minor contain precisely the same pitches, no sharps and no flats in either. They are called relative keys, and they are relatives in the truest sense: same family, same notes, different feel.

How can the same notes sound so different? Because a key is not just a collection of notes. It is a collection of notes with a centre of gravity, a home note that everything pulls toward. In C major, that home is C, and the music feels bright. In A minor, the same notes orbit A instead, and the music feels darker. Move the centre of gravity and the mood shifts, even though nothing else has changed.

This is why composers slip between a major key and its relative minor so often. It is the smoothest possible change of mood, because not a single note has to change, only the sense of where home is.

Using a random key

Use it as a writing constraint. A blank canvas is hard. Being handed a key gives you a fixed set of notes to work within, and limits are often what get the ideas flowing.

Find its relative. Whatever key comes up, work out its relative major or minor. Doing this repeatedly builds an instinct for the pairing that runs through all of music.

Locate it on the circle. Place the key on the circle of fifths and note its neighbours. Those neighbours are the keys you can most naturally move to, which is the beginning of understanding how songs change key.

Practise the scale. A key is the home of a scale. Playing the scale of whatever key appears, over and over, is how the key stops being an abstraction and becomes something under your fingers.

Pair it with a chord. Every key has a family of chords that belong to it. Combining this with a random chord and asking whether the chord fits the key is a direct route into real harmony.
