Here is something most players under twenty do not believe when they first hear it.

From the launch of the PlayStation Network until April 2019, your online ID could not be changed. Not for a fee, not by asking nicely, not ever. Whatever you typed into that box, usually at thirteen, usually in a hurry, was the name you carried into every lobby for the rest of your life on the platform.

There was one escape and it was expensive. You could start a new account. That meant walking away from your trophies, your friends, and every game you had ever bought.

So people stayed. An entire generation of players spent a decade wearing a name they picked before they were old enough to know better, and a small industry of pleading forum threads grew up around it.

Sony finally opened it up in April 2019. But the way they did it says a lot about why the name mattered so much in the first place.

What PlayStation allows

An online ID runs from three to sixteen characters. You get letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores, and the first character has to be a letter.

That is roomier than it sounds. Sixteen characters is four more than Xbox gives you, and the hyphen and underscore are genuinely useful, because they let a two-word name stay readable without a space.

The other rule is the one that shapes everything: your online ID is unique across the entire network. There is no hidden suffix, no hash, no quiet number to separate you from somebody with the same idea. If a name is gone, it is gone, and it belongs to whoever typed it first, possibly in 2008.

Which is why a PSN ID feels different to hold. It really is yours, in a way that a shared display name is not.

Changeable, but not weightless

Your first change is free. After that there is a charge, and you can make as many as you like.

Sony also did something quietly generous. Your old IDs stay reserved to you. Nobody else can take a name you have used, and you can go back to any of your previous ones. Reverting is free, and there is no real limit on it.

The catch lives in the games rather than the account. A title that first launched before April 2018 was built in a world where online IDs never changed, so it may have written yours into a save file, a leaderboard or a trophy record as though it were a permanent fact. Change your name and the old one can resurface in odd corners, or a game may lose track of something. Sony publishes a list of tested titles, and reverting to the old ID resolves most of it.

So the name is changeable now. It is not weightless. Twelve years of software was written on the assumption that it never would be.

There is one more piece of humanity in the current system. An ID that breaks the rules used to mean a banned account. Now the account gets a temporary name instead, and you are asked to pick a better one.

Choosing one you can live with

The permanence is gone, but the habit it taught is worth keeping. Choose as though you could not change it, and you will not want to.

No birth year. It tells strangers how old you are and it dates the name the moment you stop being that age.

No real name, and nothing that assembles into one. A first name and a school and a town is a jigsaw somebody can complete.

Nothing you would not say in front of a parent. This name goes on streams, screenshots and tournament brackets. The joke ages, the audience does not.

Say it out loud. If you have to spell it every time you meet somebody, you have picked a password rather than a name.

Make it a thing, not a mood. Names built from nouns last. Names built from how you felt at fifteen do not.

The best test is dull and it works. Imagine reading this name out to someone in ten years and having to explain it. If there is nothing to explain, keep it.

How many characters can a PSN ID be?

Three to sixteen. Letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores, starting with a letter.

Can I change my PSN name?

Yes, since April 2019. The first change is free and later ones carry a charge. Before that date it was genuinely impossible, which is why so many long-standing players are walking around under names they chose as teenagers.

Will changing it break my old games?

Games that first launched before April 2018 were not built for it, so your old ID can still appear in places, and some saves, leaderboards or trophy progress may not follow you across. Sony maintains a list of tested games, and switching back to your previous ID undoes most problems.

Can somebody take my old name after I change it?

No. Previous IDs stay reserved to your account, and you can return to any of them for free.

Somebody already has the name I want.

Then it is theirs, because PlayStation has no suffix system to share names the way Xbox does. Change a word rather than adding a number. A hyphen or an underscore will often rescue a two-word name that reads badly when the words are jammed together.
