A hero's name is not a name

Steve Rogers is a name. Captain America is not.

Captain America is a description that has been promoted. It tells you the rank, the allegiance and the entire argument of the character before he has done anything. And it is not remotely modern. It is one of the oldest devices in storytelling, and it has a technical term.

It is an epithet.

Homer's heroes are all wearing one. Swift-footed Achilles. Much-enduring Odysseus. Godlike Achilles when the meter needed something longer. Rosy-fingered dawn, wine-dark sea. Every important thing in the poems arrives with a description bolted to it.

For a very long time people read those as poetry. Achilles was called swift-footed at a given moment because his speed mattered at that moment.

Then somebody actually counted.

The man who worked out why Homer repeated himself

Milman Parry was an American classicist, born in Oakland in 1902, who went to Paris and wrote a doctoral thesis in 1928 on what he called the traditional epithet in Homer.

His argument was almost rude in its simplicity. The epithets are not ornament. They are equipment.

The Iliad and the Odyssey were composed out loud, by singers, in a strict rhythm, without a written text to lean on. A singer improvising at speed cannot afford to invent a fresh phrase for Achilles every time Achilles walks into a line. What he needs is a small warehouse of ready-made phrases about Achilles, each one a different length, so that whatever gap the meter leaves him, he has something that fits.

Parry defined a formula as a group of words used regularly under the same rhythmic conditions to express one essential idea. Then he built the tables to prove it. For a single hero's name in a single grammatical case, there might be several different noun-and-epithet combinations, each one slotting into a different position in the line.

And here is the detail that settles the argument. The ships are called swift even when they are pulled up on the beach and going nowhere at all.

The phrase was chosen because it fit the rhythm, not because it fit the ships.

Parry went to Yugoslavia to find living singers who still worked this way, and recorded them. His student Albert Lord carried the work on after him. Between them they changed how we understand every oral tradition on earth.

When the epithet ate the name

So an epithet is a handle. It is what you grab when you need to refer to somebody quickly, in rhythm, in front of a crowd.

Which explains what happened next.

In the comics, the description stopped being an addition and became the whole thing. The Man of Steel is a Homeric epithet. The Dark Knight is a Homeric epithet. But Superman and Batman are epithets too, and they have swallowed the names underneath them entirely. Nobody says Clark. That is the point of the mask.

You can watch the same machinery in the names above. The Quantum Baron. Captain Atomic. The Terrific Sniper. Not one of these is a name. Every one is a phrase describing somebody, promoted to stand in for them.

And they behave exactly like Homer's did. They are formulaic, they come in a small number of shapes, and they exist because a phrase is easier to shout than a person is to describe.

Three thousand years, and the technology has not changed.

The grammar of a hero name

There are three slots, and almost every hero name in existence is filling some of them.

The article or the title. The. Captain. Doctor. Mister. This slot is doing status work. The makes the figure singular and mythic. A military rank makes them legitimate. Doctor almost always makes them a villain, and nobody has ever satisfactorily explained why.

The modifier. Quantum. Nuclear. Fancy. Quick. Terrific. This is Homer's slot, the swift-footed slot. It carries the one quality you want the audience to hold in their head.

The noun. Phoenix. Baron. Sage. Vulture. Sword. This is what the figure fundamentally is. An animal, a rank, a weapon, or a symbol.

Now the useful part. The best names in this shape have a clash between two of the slots. The Quantum Baron works because a baron is medieval and the quantum is not. The Fancy Phoenix works because a phoenix is not fancy, a phoenix is on fire.

Put two words together that agree with each other and you get nothing. The Mighty Warrior is a slot machine that has come up with the same fruit three times.

Building one that survives the second issue

The name has to survive success. An epithet is a promise about what the character always is. Choose one that stays true after the character has grown, or you will spend the rest of the story apologising for it.

It should be shoutable. Somebody has to yell this across a burning street. Two or three syllables in the noun, one strong stress, no clusters your mouth has to slow down for.

Leave one thing unexplained. Swift-footed tells you a fact. The Voiceless One asks a question. A name that raises a question buys you a reader for another twenty pages.

Know what the real name is. The gap between the person and the epithet is where the entire genre lives. If the mask says Captain Atomic, somebody underneath it has an ordinary name and an ordinary problem, and that is your story.

Say it out loud before you commit, because a hero name is not a name. It is a thing a crowd shouts.

Questions people ask about hero names

What exactly is an epithet?

A descriptive phrase attached to a person so firmly that it travels with them. Swift-footed Achilles. The Man of Steel. It is one of the oldest naming devices we have, and superhero names are made almost entirely out of it.

Did Homer's epithets mean anything?

Less than people assumed. Milman Parry showed they were metrical building blocks chosen to fill a particular slot in the line, which is why the ships are described as swift while they are sitting on a beach. The phrase was picked to fit the rhythm.

Should my hero's name start with The?

It depends whether you want a person or a legend. The makes a figure singular and slightly unreal, which is why it suits masked and mythic characters. A rank like Captain does the opposite. It makes them accountable to somebody.

Why is Doctor always a villain?

Because the title claims authority that nobody granted, and because a doctor is somebody who takes things apart for your own good. It is the only common hero title that makes an audience suspicious by default, and writers have been quietly exploiting that for a century.

What makes one of these names better than another?

Friction between the words. Two words that agree produce nothing. A word from one world set against a word from another produces a character, because the reader begins wondering how those two things ended up in the same person.
