What the vernal equinox tool does

The vernal equinox is the astronomical first day of spring. This tool tells you the date it falls on for any year from 1900 to 2050, for either hemisphere. Pick the year and the hemisphere, and it gives you the day. The dates come from precise astronomical figures rather than a rough rule of thumb, so they are the real moments, not approximations.

What an equinox actually is

The word equinox comes from Latin for "equal night," and that is the clue to what is happening. Twice a year the Earth's tilted axis points neither toward the sun nor away from it, and at those moments the sun sits directly over the equator. Day and night come out very nearly equal everywhere on Earth. The "nearly" is worth a mention: because the atmosphere bends sunlight a little, the day works out slightly longer than the night even at the equinox, but it is as close to balanced as the year gets. The vernal equinox is the one that tips the year into spring.

Why the hemisphere changes the date

This is the part that trips people up, and it is the reason the tool asks which hemisphere you are in. There are two equinoxes each year, one in March and one in September, and they are opposite seasons in the two halves of the world. When the March equinox brings spring to the northern hemisphere, the same moment brings autumn to the southern. So the vernal, or spring, equinox falls in March if you are in the north, but in September if you are in the south. By convention the March event is usually called the vernal equinox after the northern seasons, but spring genuinely arrives in September below the equator, and the tool gives you the right date for the half you choose.

For the northern hemisphere, the vernal equinox falls on 20 March 2025 and again on 20 March 2026. For the southern hemisphere, spring's equinox lands on 22 September 2025 and 23 September 2026. One small thing to keep in mind: the equinox is a single worldwide instant given in universal time, so if it falls close to midnight, your local date could be a day either side depending on your time zone.

Beyond the astronomy, this is one of the oldest dates people have paid attention to. The return of longer days and the start of the growing season made it a natural marker for renewal, and it still anchors festivals and new-year celebrations around the world, from Nowruz in Persian tradition to various spring rites.
