What the inch fraction calculator does

A decimal like 0.625 of an inch is no use at a tape measure, which is marked in fractions, not decimals. This translates between them. You give it a decimal inch, and it returns the nearest fraction, along with the value in feet and in metric units.

It is the bridge from a number on a screen to a mark on a rule. Below is how it works.

How the fraction is found

The calculator splits the number into its whole inches and the leftover decimal, then finds the fraction closest to that leftover:

Decimal inch → nearest fraction on the rule, plus the whole inches

It checks the decimal against every marking on a finely divided rule and picks the nearest one, so 0.625 comes back as five eighths, and 2.25 as two and a quarter. Alongside the fraction it gives the value in feet, millimeters, centimeters, and meters.

Down to a sixty-fourth

The fractions it works to go down to a sixty-fourth of an inch, which is the finest marking on a precision rule and plenty for careful shop and carpentry work. It always returns the tidiest form of that fraction, so it gives a half rather than thirty-two sixty-fourths, and an eighth rather than eight sixty-fourths.

Because it rounds to the nearest available marking, the fraction is the closest one you can actually set on the rule, not an exact match for every possible decimal. For woodworking that is exactly what you want, a real, markable measurement rather than a number with no place on the tape. The decimal and metric figures are there alongside it for when you need the exact value.

A worked example: 0.625 inches

Say you have a measurement of 0.625 inches.

The calculator returns 5/8 inch, the fraction that sits exactly at that decimal. In metric that is about 15.88 millimeters, or 1.59 centimeters.

So a decimal you could not find on a tape becomes a clean five-eighths mark, with the metric value there too if you are working to a millimeter rule.

Where this helps

This earns its place anywhere a decimal meets a fraction-marked tool. A calculation or a digital caliper gives you a decimal, but your tape measure and combination square are marked in fractions, so you need the nearest eighth or sixteenth to set the cut. Plans drawn in decimals, or dimensions converted from metric, throw up the same need.

So when the number in front of you is a decimal and the tool in your hand is in fractions, this closes the gap. It also gives the metric conversion in the same breath, which helps when a project mixes a fraction-marked tape with a millimeter rule.
