What the asphalt calculator does

Asphalt is ordered by the ton, but you measure a driveway in feet, so the job is to turn an area and a depth into a tonnage you can quote to a supplier. This does that. You enter the width, length, and depth, and it returns the volume, the weight in tons or tonnes, and a cost if you add a price.

It works in both imperial and metric, switching units to match. Below is how it works and the practical points that keep the figure honest.

How the tonnage is worked out

The calculator finds the volume, then turns it into weight using the density of asphalt:

Weight = length × width × depth × density

It multiplies the three dimensions for the volume, then multiplies by how much asphalt weighs per unit of volume to get the weight, which it gives in tons and pounds, or tonnes and kilograms. The cost, if you add one, is that weight times your price per ton.

The density, and why asphalt is sold by weight

The figure that converts volume to weight is the density of hot-mix asphalt, taken here as 145 pounds per cubic foot, which is about 2,322 kilograms per cubic meter. That is the long-standing industry-standard density for the dense hot-mix used on driveways and roads, so it suits most jobs.

Asphalt is sold by weight rather than volume for a good reason: the material's density shifts a little from batch to batch with the mix and the aggregate, so weighing it gives a consistent quantity where measuring volume would not. That is why a supplier quotes a price per ton, and why the tonnage, not the cubic yards, is the number you order by.

Depth, compaction, and the base

A couple of practical things sit behind the depth. A residential driveway is usually laid two to three inches thick, with heavier use, for trucks or an RV, calling for three to four. The depth to enter is the compacted thickness, the finished depth after rolling, which is what the standard density assumes. Asphalt is laid looser and thicker than its final depth and squashed down, but the supplier's tonnage already accounts for that, so you work in compacted depth.

The other point is that the asphalt is only the top layer. A lasting driveway sits on several inches of compacted gravel base, and that base is figured and ordered separately, so the tonnage here is the asphalt alone. It is also worth ordering a little over, around ten percent, for the edges and the bit lost in laying, since a paving job that runs short mid-pour is an awkward thing to pause.

A worked example: a driveway

Say you are paving a driveway 40 feet long and 20 feet wide, 3 inches thick.

The volume is 40 × 20 × (3 ÷ 12) = 200 cubic feet. At 145 pounds a cubic foot that is 29,000 pounds, and dividing by the 2,000 pounds in a ton gives about 14.5 tons. Adding ten percent for waste brings the order to around 16 tons.

That tonnage is what you would give the asphalt plant, with the gravel base ordered on top of it.

Questions people ask

How many tons of asphalt do I need?

Work out the volume from length, width, and depth, then multiply by the density and convert to tons. A 40 by 20 foot driveway at 3 inches is about 14.5 tons.

How thick should an asphalt driveway be?

Two to three inches of compacted asphalt for a residential driveway, three to four for heavier vehicles, over a compacted gravel base.

Why is asphalt sold by the ton?

Because its density varies a little by mix, so weighing gives a consistent quantity where measuring volume would not. Suppliers quote a price per ton.

Do I enter loose or compacted depth?
